Mihajlovic reveals he told Donnarumma to stay at Milan: “He made the wrong decision”

Gigio Donnarumma decided to leave AC Milan at the end of last season as his contract with the club expired. His PSG spell hasn’t been that successful since and Sinisa Mihajlovic believes he made the wrong decision.

Mihajlovic was the manager of Milan during the 2015/16 season, during which Donnarumma made his debut for the club at the age of just 16. The goalkeeper has the Serbian manager to thank for it as he benched veteran Diego Lopez in favour of the youngster.

During his press conference ahead of Bologna-Fiorentina, as cited by MilanNews, Mihajlovic was asked about the Donnarumma situation. He revealed that he spoke to the goalkeeper and advised him to stay at Milan.

“You are too harsh on Donnarumma, both the French and the Italians. You make him pay for everything, he made the wrong decision, I too spoke to him and advised him to stay, but he chose this way. If Donnarumma hadn’t been there, Italy wouldn’t have won the Euros, he was the protagonist. He’s a good guy anyway,” he stated.

It was a shame for Milan to lose Donnarumma on a free transfer but it must be pointed out that his replacement, Mike Maignan, has been fantastic since his arrival. Financially speaking, it made sense to sign the Frenchman as well.
