Milan must dispel a 16-year taboo in order to defeat Empoli – the data

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head into tonight’s game against Empoli knowing it is another test of their Scudetto credentials, and they must overcome a peculiarity if they are to win.

As our colleagues at SempreMilan.it note, it is 16 years since Milan won both games against Empoli in a season, and given that they won 4-2 away from home in the reverse fixture they will end that run with a victory tonight.

It was the 2005-06 season which was the last time in which Milan won against Empoli both in the first leg and in the return leg. In Tuscany, Gilardino and Vieri’s brace overturned Vannucchi’s opener, while at home a brace from Inzaghi and Shevchenko made it a 3-0 win.

After that season the curse began: four points collected in the following season, three in 2007-08 (a defeat at San Siro), then a gap until 2014-15 with only two points collected, four in 2015-16 and three 2016-17.

The last two meetings came in 2018-19 with a draw in Tuscany and a 3-0 victory at the return game. This year the first leg success has already arrived, but a follow-up is needed.
