How Milan can advance to the Champions League knockout phase

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan claimed all three points against Atletico Madrid this evening, scoring the winner late in the second half. Junior Messias was the big hero and his goal means the Rossoneri are still alive in the Champions League.

Currently on 4 points along with Atletico Madrid, they could snatch second place with a win against Liverpool in the final round. However, Milan also depend on the game between Porto and Atletico Madrid to end in a draw or a win for the latter.

The standings are as follows right now: 1) Liverpool, 15 points, +10GD. 2) Porto, 5 points, -5GD. 3) Milan, 4 points, -2GD. 4) Atletico Madrid, -3GD.

Milan are currently ahead of Atletico Madrid as the internal goal difference is exactly the same (2 goals for them, 2 goals for the Spaniards). That’s why the overall goal difference has come into action.

In other words, the Rossoneri can’t be level on points with Porto if they want to finish above the, since both the internal points and goal difference record is better for the Portuguese side.

Milan need the game between Porto and Atletico Madrid to finish in a draw. They could also go through if it ends in a win for Atleti, but only if the winning margin is the same as for them (for the goal difference).

  1. I honestly believe we can get a decent win against Liverpool.

Maybe they can give us a hand for old time sake. 😉

Help us come out of the group so we can both book a place in the final and then settle the score.

But I doubt Liverpool will want to take it easy with Milan seeing that they want bragging rights irrespective of being clear leaders of the group.

That fixture is the uefa champions League final.

    1. Yes! It will be a tough match. Though I have this feeling that Klopp won’t be harsh on MILAN. We just have to win whether it’s their first team or not! Forza Milan!❤️🖤

    2. Well, Liverpool played largely with their reserves yesterday. That could be risky for a motivated Milan, while Liverpool doesn’t have anything to lose really. It seems to get down to goal difference (if Porto doesn’t spoil everything).

  2. The positive thing is that Liverpool have nothing to play for – there’s no way they’ll play a full strength side. Porto and Athletico could well cancel each other out.
