GdS: Milan looking to sign Asensio or Ziyech – comparing the numbers of each

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have got two forwards in their sights looking to reinforce the attacking department in Marco Asensio and Hakim Ziyech, but who would serve the Rossoneri better?

La Gazzetta dello Sport writes that for Asensio it is a question of salary because the Spaniard wants €7m net per season, but there should not be a problem finding a deal with Real Madrid who do not seem willing to offer him a renewal. For Ziyech it is a formula issue: a paid loan of €4-5m at most, with an option or obligation to buy set at no more than €20m is needed.

Who is more useful to Milan? From a technical point of view, they are both best on the right side of the attack but can operate as a central attacking midfielder too, therefore the 7-10 hybrid that Stefano Pioli needs.

In the last season, they made a comparable total number of appearances (44 Ziyech, 42 Asensio), although the minutes favoured the Moroccan (2491 to 2135).

Ziyech is definitely more of an assist man (6 vs. 2) but he needs many more shots (98 to 75) to hit the target (41 to 39). Ziyech crosses plenty more (117 to 41), but scores less (8 goals to 12), which shows how Asensio can be clinical.

What is clear is that both would constitute a big boost in quality to the right wing and playmaker roles, which Milan really struggled with last season, but neither will be an easy pursuit.

  1. Some of the more important numbers for this current side will be pressing and defensive stats, how many turnovers they initiated, distance covered etc.
