Romano: Milan submit €7m bid to Young Boys for defender – ‘player keen on the move’

AC Milan are moving quickly in their pursuit of Zachary Athekame, having launched a bid to try sign him from Young Boys.

Guela Doue of Strasbourg has long been reported to be the number one target for the right-back role, but the costs involved have made it difficult to make any progress on this front.

As a result, this morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport spoke about a new target from Switzerland, more specifically Athekame. By signing him Milan could shift the budget saved to other areas.

Milan launch first bid

Fabrizio Romano reports: “Understand AC Milan sent today their first official bid for Zachary Athekame as new right back. Proposal worth €7m, negotiations ongoing with player keen on the move.”

Matteo Moretto is along the same lines: “Milan have submitted an official offer for Zachary Athekame of approximately €7m. Negotiations are ongoing with Young Boys and the Swiss full-back who has already said yes to the Rossoneri.”

If Gianluca Di Marzio is to be believed, though, the offer will not be enough to land Athekame. Young Boys are asking €10m for the 2004-born full-back, who is also being eyed by Bologna and Udinese. The Swiss club are currently refusing to accept lower offers.

Last season, the defender made 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing three assists.

  1. I’ve read he is an attacking right back and that is the part I don’t get. We have Jimenez and Saelemakers. Both are as attack minded as it gets. My Swiss friend told me it would be a really smart signing. To avoid paying Brugge or similar club 25M next yerar.

        1. Milan is really a club without ambitions. He sold Reijnders, Theo and a couple of other players for 100 million, and invested 40. The price is Doue. Okay. The set is Jashari. Okay. Then let’s admit that we are a club that looks more like Atalanta and Bologna, than a club that has the ambition to fight for the title. I don’t know how you are going to sell season tickets to players like this. The management and owners of AC Milan are a FRAUD.

          1. Yes, but he can be talented and after 2 seasons we sell him to PL club for 35m€… that’s the point…
But from other point of view, he can be good signing. Like Napoli when they buy Simeone for 12m, or Anguisa for 15m€… low price doesn’t automatically mean he is bad…
Low risk player for sure, better like when we buy Musah for 20m€ and he don’t play like we want… and then Furlani don’t want to sell him for 25m€…

          2. Woldik- you just confirmed that you think like a Bologna fan. Milan needs reinforcements for now, not to wait for them to lose, for their price to rise and then sell them.

          3. Blah blah blah blah. You do realize the income short fall we’re having because we don’t have CL football? If we can have equivalent investments to the players that left but have money left over, what’s the problem?

And again our revenues are going to take a serious hit next year without European football. This is a fact.

  2. Alternative to Doue, alternative to Jashari and Vlahovic….
At this point, we need to find alternative competition to Champions league and Serie A as well

  3. I’m often critical that we try to sign players after they have exploded and become a big name… Hopefully this is an example of doing it the right way and picking up a gem – we’ll have to see.

  4. I’m increasingly pessimistic about these type of signings for Milan; cheap from a different league in another country; hasn’t worked well for us recently.
Can’t we get a top player already proven in Serie A ?

  5. Milan has to be the biggest transfer market joke ever. The club says he is worth 10m. Just pay the damn 10m. Same for 40m. Just pay it and save us the time wasting.

  6. 7m? Ahaha. That’s about right, for Milan’s ongoing budget

Get such players, will get such season performance. Nooo complaints hahahaha

Who needs champion coach and directors?? 😀

  7. What most of you did not understand is quality doesn’t have to be expensive… How much did Milan sign Theo. If he has renewed his contract or Milan ready to sell him last season. He would have been sold for 50m minimum.

Having eye for good and promising player from small European clubs at a lower cost doesn’t mean the player lacks qualities.

Some man average players who were lucky to play for big teams and bought with higher fee. We’re.

How much did Man U paid for Onana, Zirkzee, Anthony, … Do you remember the price Chelsea signed Jackson, Kepa Arrizablaga, Enzo, even Caciedo both of them combined are not better than Kante in the midfield.

Milan management could have sign Pogba on free with reduced salary. He will surely raised the quality of the team and improve the marketing and media

    1. Pogba? He’s still playing? I do get your overall point. Everyone expects us to invest every single penny we make from sales. What they fail to realize is this team is going to hit a serious revenue shortfall without European football. So if we have a surplus now, it’ll be better later on.

    2. Bro.. Theo wants 8m nett salary that Milan cant afford him. Seri A these day can’t compare from financially perspective with PL clubs bro, even they from championship. For example: Italian club majority haven’t their own stadium, too much bureaucracy in Italian.

Milan already make good decision to sign modric than Pogba. Modric with his skill and influence can improve Milan midfielders. Pogba ? He only wants big salary + injury phrone.

  9. We go foreign again with pointless players. … these are the exact signings we should stay in Italy for. Milan is lost.

  10. Furlani is abusing himself on the idea of signing an 8mil player and reselling him for 15💦💦💦💦

    1. Sure Ted, because Italian clubs haven’t been selling clubs for a profit for 20 years. Better to sell them for a loss or lose them on a free.

  11. Really curious how Young Boys aren’t attacked by Milan fans. The player evaluation is 5M, they are asking for 10M. It is like Brugge asked for 64M. Quick go harass them clowns…

  12. The fans claiming Milan are cheap for going after an up and coming player are the same pieces of garbage who complain that we ‘could have’ signed Enzo Fernandez and others for a pittance after the fact. The same pieces of garbage who complain about losing players for nothing then complain when players are sold. GFY.
