It is no secret by now that AC Milan had considered making a late signing for a central defender. However, they did not get any over the line.
Throughout the summer, several names were posed as potential targets for Milan. Of course, Goncalo Inacio was the priority target, with Ruben Amorim reportedly seeing him as a near-perfect fit for the defence. In fact, he had pushed for him right until the end of the mercato.

Yet, he was not the only viable option. Links to John Stones, Tiago Gabriel and several others emerged over the course of the mercato, but only Mario Gila joined, leaving some disappointed.
Now, with the mercato closed, a new link has emerged about Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, who has previously been linked to the Rossoneri.
Scalvini’s potential move to Milan?
Speaking during the daily MilanVibes show, Pietro Balzano Prota discussed a late move for Scalvini and why it failed to progress at the end of the window.
“Before the final day of the transfer window, AC Milan attempted to determine whether they had the potential to land Giorgio Scalvini, a player sought by Amorim. The problem wasn’t so much the desire to complete the deal, but rather Atalanta’s valuation, which exceeded €40 million.
“At that price, AC Milan’s board believed they could find even more suitable players on the market (and in the future).”
Considering Fabrizio Romano’s report about the central defender pursuit earlier today, it certainly aligns that the club were not willing to invest such a significant fee…

First of all, you had Inacio and Tiago Gabriel for that sum of money. Tiago Gabriel for 10-15 million less, actually, so you have no excuse.
Secondly, you have submitted an offer of 20 million euros for TG?! What did you expect?! You wouldn’t meet their demands?! 25 or 30 million was deemed too much but money is not a problem for you? Was he not suitable enough for you? What did you do to sign that other guy? Nothing at all! Tomori sidelined and then rehabiltated?!

maybe we can try Barte as CCB. I think he has good positioning and nice read of the game, nice 1v1, pace better than Gabbia… crosses are great that could translate into long balls from the back…
Zalewski/Kardioglu/Cambiaso + N8 engine-type midfielder would have given us more, imo. someone like Camavinga/Nchema/Sano/Bergvall

To be fair, there are two other CBs we reportedly targeted who are Mendes clients and didn’t get those either. I don’t think that conspiracy really holds up here.

It’s not 70 million (no “s”) FOR Moreira and he is not a RWB, he is a LM/LWB/LB, maybe even LW. He won’t be on the right side, Italy doesn’t tolerate this, perhaps AMC, who knows.
Who has missed 35% of his possible matches since joining Atalanta’s first team due to injury. Then, if the club signs him and he goes down with another muscle injury for three months, you’ll say that the club is stupid for spending so much money on an injury prone player.

The only thing established about him is his injury record and injury proneness. Guy already had ACL tear once and multiple muscle injury over the year… he already injured for more than 500 days since his semior contract and he is only 22.

Thanks atalanta for putting 40m euro price tag, thats equal to inacio price with more healthy and fit. Scalvini are the next caldara, once italian future for CB but vanished because injury prone. Dont forget caldara get six year contract in ACM and play only few match ( worst transfer for ACM doing by leonardo). Scalvini absence more than 30% total official match for atalanta last season, not worth for 40m euro

Nesta? That was a completely different era. If Nesta went down we still had players like Maldini, Costacurta, Stam, Silva and other good CBs (depending on the precise season).
If we spend 40M on an injury prone player now and he goes down, we’ll be left with this same list of players you’re complaining about, but 40M poorer.
Also, most of Nesta’s injuries (at club level) happened in the final third of his career, not when he was 22. His injuries when younger, with the national team mostly, are truly bizarre. Scalvini has missed 35% of his games already at 22.
Let’s see him stay fit for 75% of a one single season before we get too excited about buying him. It could be a looooong wait though.
