GdS: Milan’s mission is the Champions League knockouts – €60m rest on next two games

AC Milan travel to face Dinamo Zagreb tomorrow night knowing that they need to win their final two Champions League group stage games to secure passage to the last 16 of the Champions League.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) writes that the two defeats against Chelsea made everything a bit complicated for Milan, but they can still qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League with wins against Dinamo Zagreb and Red Bull Salzburg.

New owner Gerry Cardinale knows that the first fundamental step for the club is to become one of the best 16 teams in European football once again. In this way, international interest in Milan will be rekindled, bringing more revenue and therefore money to be reinvested later for the strengthening of the squad.

To achieve all this, it is not enough to be competitive only in Italy, but now the Rossoneri need to make a leap in quality also in Europe. Qualification for the round of 16 is obviously also important at an economic level because it would bring in an extra €60m.

It is money that could also be very useful to tackle certain issues such as Rafael Leao’s renewal in the coming weeks. The negotiation remains complicated, but any Champions League revenues could give an important hand.

        1. If we start relying on logic on this forum we’re screwed. Have you read what some people here write? LOL!

          But yeah, did some digging…
          Position Prize money
          Winners €20m
          Runners-up €15.5m
          Semi-finals €12.5m
          Quarter-finals €10.6m
          Round of 16 €9.6m
          Group stage €15.64m

So it’s extra ~10M€ for qualifying.

  1. So, if we win the nesxt 2 games against, objectively speaking, mediocre clubs, like DInamo and Salzburg, we will get 60M euros but then we will lose Leao because we are cheap and stingy and we don’t want to offer him 1M euros higher salary to meet his demand (he wants 7M but we offer 6M)! And then we will buy some ‘promising’ player for 30M or more in the next market… LOL 😀

    1. Salzburg isn’t “just a mediocre club”. They were in the top16 last year and almost won Bayer München at home in the playoffs.

    1. They were used to balance the books. Not all income could be used in transfer fund and wages. Football club is far more complicated than that.

And just FYI, in case you don’t know/already know but prefer to ignore it/other case, last year even with money from Scudetto and champions league we’re still in the red.
