AC Milan’s interest in signing Leon Goretzka on a free transfer has been confirmed by a source close to Bayern Munich’s affairs.

According to the latest from Bild journalist and Bayern Munich insider Christian Falk, Milan’s interest in signing Goretzka is very much genuine. In his latest column, he says that ‘AC Milan are making a concrete move for the experienced German.

Not only that, but he adds that ‘Massimiliano Allegri very much wants him’ at Milan, but there are also rumours that Arsenal are still keen on Goretzka, as well as Atletico Madrid. Bayern meanwhile have already announced his exit, and are therefore planning for life without him.

As a reminder, Falk reported earlier in the week that the 31-year-old is open to the idea of a move to a Serie A club, even if there are other options around Europe too.

An experienced reinforcement

Allegri is understood to want players who are ready to contribute immediately ahead of what is looking like an increasingly likely return to the Champions League, and subsequently a return to playing potentially over 50 games per season.

Goretzka ticks the box given that he’s a player with 17 career trophies. He has experience at an elite club and for an elite national team, which are traits Allegri believes are crucial to boosting the team’s personality.

IA midfield trio of Goretzka, Luka Modric and Adrien Rabiot would have few equals in Italy, at least in terms of major honours.

  1. If we want to be competitive they need to give Allegri what he wants, and not take away key players like Thiago Silva and Zlatan as we did back in the day and then blame it on Max when you offer no backups other than Bojan Krkic and a way past his prime Robinho.

    1. Indeed, but I think going from a midfield with an average age of ~24 to one with an average age of ~34 isn’t great for the long term viability of a project that is clearly constrained by things like salary caps and transfer fee caps. It should be a good balance. Hopefully when Modric retires in 2027, the player to step into his spot will be one in his 20s.
