Official: Milan confirm Modric’s season is done with surgery update

This evening, AC Milan have confirmed everyone’s fears that Luka Modric will not play for the club again this season.

It was initially believed, or maybe hoped, that the Croatian had not suffered a serious injury after the collision with Manuel Locatelli. However, that was proved to be wrong this afternoon, with scans showing that he had broken his cheekbone in two places.

Reports from Croatia suggested that would be his season over, with only a few weeks left to play. At 40 years old and ahead of the World Cup, it makes sense why he would not play for Milan again this season.

Modric out until World Cup

Unfortunately, that has now been all but confirmed by the club. In a statement published this evening, there is no mention of him returning before the final game of the season.

“AC Milan announces that Luka Modrić underwent surgery today at the La Madonnina Clinic in Milan. Surgery was necessary to treat a complex, multi-fragment fracture of the left zygomatic bone. The operation, performed by Dr. Luca Autelitano’s team in the presence of AC Milan doctors Stefano Mazzoni and Andrea Bulgheroni, was a complete success.

“The Club wishes Luka a speedy recovery ahead of the FIFA World Cup!”

The fears now, then, are that we have already seen the last of Modric in a Milan shirt. After all, his future remains up in the air. More than ever, the hope will be that he renews, just so he gets a proper send off, if nothing else.
