It looked as though Mattia Liberali was all set to join Catanzaro, but now AC Milan have firmly put the brakes on things.
Liberali’s future has been speculated about throughout the duration of the current summer window, but it appeared as though the teenage playmaker was bound for Catanzaro. The Serie B side apparently agreed to sign him permanently, and for no transfer fee, but with a resale clause.

However, in the past couple of days – when Liberali was expected to fly out for a medical – doubts began to emerge. Now, Matteo Moretto has explained in a YouTube video exactly what those doubts are.
“The situation is deadlocked between Liberali and Catanzaro, with Milan never giving the green light to certain conditions. Milan do not want to sell him for free with a future resale percentage,” he said.
“Milan have two options: the first is to renew him, but that’s complicated. They’re seriously considering renewing him, but it’s complicated, not impossible. The other option is a permanent transfer, but not a free one. Currently, Liberali’s situation at Catanzaro is stalled.”
Torino hijack?
As a reminder, Nicolo Schira reported on Tuesday that Torino are attempting to hijack the deal for Liberali, and they might well be willing to pay the up-front fee that the Rossoneri management want.
Nevertheless, Moretto’s report that a contract extension is being considered suggests that even Milan have not figured out what they want to do with the future of the Italian talent.
It would be the smartest to renew him even if we have to pay a bit more than we usual do for youngsters if we then can keep control of the player. I had sorta hoped that he would stay here and learn from Modric but a renewal and a loan for a year or two could greatly benefit all parts involved as well.

Absolutely it seems like a once in a lifetime opportunity for both player and club so I’m a bit perplexed why it doesn’t seem to be in the cards.
On a different matter I just realized that the Futuro has sold Noah Reveyere to Pau FC in France and already had let go of Lapo Nava to Cremonese so it seems like the u23 doesn’t have a goalkeeper.
Undoubtedly, Modric’s mere presence would enhance Liberali, but I think the boy has everything, his skill or the level he is cannot be coached it’s innate for him, he just needs to play as do Camarda and Comotto.
I think if it was a toss up between learning from Miodric on training ground or just playing week in week out competitively , I definitely choose the latter
I agree his talent isn’t just something you learn but still he could still learn a thing or two by the pressence of Modric so even if only for half a season could be beneficial. Personally I would probably choose the first option.

I think the “players will” is actually the agents will. Young players often rely on agents for protecting their interests against the league and club. I wouldn’t be surprised if liberali was advised to resist signing and drum up transfer interest to show his value to secure a deal that is both economically good (for the agent and player) and ensure a direct and/or guaranteed path to first team football.
This is a mixture of the Agent, the player and whatever the hell went on between Liberali and Zlatan.
Someone figured out that you don’t let go of a talent you nurtured for years who shows promise. Good to see they will try to extend him. It is the best decision.
