Laudisa: Milan missed out on €12m deal for Benfica star because they ‘preferred Yacine Adli’

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan may well be left feeling some regret that Enzo Fernandez got away from their grasp, but it is not Renato Sanches that they chose to pursue instead.

Milan used the summer transfer window to try and plug some gaps in their squad with generally young and unproven players, with the major outlay being on Club Brugge playmaker Charles De Ketelaere, who joined Brahim Diaz and Yacine Adli in that department.

The decision to sign De Ketelaere turned Milan away from other targets but it turns out that opting to sign Adli from Bordeaux had the same effect, with Enzo Fernandez going to Benfica for €12m where he is now exploding.

La Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Carlo Laudisa spoke about Fernandez during an interview on Carlo Pellegatti’s YouTube channel in which he was asked about the idea of the Argentine midfielder being a regret for the management.

“He ended up at Benfica for 12 million euros, while Milan preferred Yacine Adli,” he said (via PianetaMilan).

  1. It doesn’t matter if they missed on him because of Renato, CDK or Adli. Whoever made the decision to pursue or put trust in those other players instead of Enzo Fernandez messed up and looks really bad right now.
Especially when from what is reported the chief scout Moncada was pushing hard for Milan to sign Enzo

    1. Exactly at ILWYDLS, hindsight… literally every single club has missed out on a player that went on to be good elsewhere… it’s the way of football.
There’s so many cases of great clubs missing out on players they didn’t bet on.
Adli hasn’t exploded, but he is not a terrible player at all. Players seem to need a period to adapt under Pioli, and we know that very well as fans. So the Enzo talks, Renato, Julian Alvarez etc are starting to irritate me now and are just clickbait to stir up unnecessary emotions.
If Napoli hadn’t had this brilliant start, we would be praising Pioli and the boys again.
There’s still a whole 2nd half of the season to be played, and this WC will stop the Napoli momentum, it’s going to be difficult for them to just go into 5th gear instantly…
Sometimes we really just need to chill and trust the people who took us to the top

      1. Napoli has had a record breaking start (based on points per game they’d break Juve 102 pts record) while our start is still on Scudetto winning form. I’m not bothered one bit.
Let’s put it this way Real must be pissed the let Theo slip, same with Arsenal with Bennacer or inter with Tonali. It happens

        1. True, it happens and it’s going to continue to happen. No club will ever have a 100% success rate when it comes to players.
          As you said, it happens.
The only thing I’m concerned about now is the 2 renewals we need to sort out.
I understand everything I’m terms of FFP, and balancing books and all, but we need to be able to renew our top performers salary with less drama in the near future, sooner rather than later.
I’m hoping at least one of Benny or Rafa renew, then sell the other for the best amount.
Between the two I really don’t know who I’d prefer to stay over the other as I’m sure a case study can be done and they will probably have equal value to the team.at least to renew one is my wish

  2. Even if we got Enzo we wouldn’t have given him playing time to test his qualities.Milan our problem is we don’t give young players chance that’s all.

    1. Seriously I am tired of all these “we don’t give young players a chance at all”

We’re LITERALLY one of the youngest squad in Europe and that’s INCLUDING IBRA AND GIROUD.

Not sure if you wanna play U-15 instead or what.

      1. They use that false narrative to blame Pioli for mostly not playing Adli, or Vranckx and Thiaw, even though the players he is using instead of those players like Gabbia, Pobega Brahim or CDK are more or less the same age or younger.
It’s not Pioli’s fault that his director waited till 11:55 on August 31 to sign most of those players and miss the whole pre-season preparation.
They also forget that Adli came from the worst team in France and got relegated
Thiaw came from a club that played in 2nd Bundesliga last season
Wolfsburg couldn’t wait to get rid of Vranckx.
And they compare them to one of the best players in Argentina over the last couple years, who is now kicking ass in the Portuguese league, the Champions league and the World Cup .

    2. How can you said Milan didn’t give young players a chance when 90-95% of our players are still young?! Did you somehow still stuck at Ancelotti era where the lineup are 99% veteran players who almost reach 40 years old? 🤣

Leao, Kalulu, Tonali, Diaz, Gabbia, Tomori, Thiaw, Alexis, Dest, Vranckx, Bennacer, CDK, Theo, Calabria, Pobega, Adli are still young at 20-25 years old.

And the only over 30 years old players are Tatarusanu, Mirante, Florenzi, Giroud, Ibra, Kjaer, and Messias.

    1. Same here, but yeah to be expected since there’s no Serie-A for another month lol.

I am just waiting for articles like “Arsenal felt regret as Bennacer now flourised at Milan and would cost them 50M to buy him back”
