CM: ‘One step ahead’ – Milan still favourites to land Goretzka despite top four fears

This summer, AC Milan will attempt to sign Leon Goretzka when he becomes a free agent and they may have already given themselves an advantage.

Goretzka is next in the Luka Modric and Adrien Rabiot-type signings. Not that he’s a midfielder, but rather he’s a player with experience who has been a big part of successful teams. He also is a continuation of RedBird stepping away from signing players of youth.

Massimiliano Allegri has campaigned for the German and he is viewed as a perfect third player in the midfield. However, there are still reservations about his financial demands and whether the Rossoneri want to offer the sums he is requesting.

Milan have Goretzka advantage… but

Regardless of the financial fine print, the Diavolo may not have a chance to land the German if they don’t qualify for the Champions League. Like Modric, he would want to play for a team who have qualified for Europe next season.

So, they better end the season on a strong note.

The longer that their Champions League doubts continue, the longer opportunities can be presented to Goretzka. Yet, they may not need to worry too much. Indeed, Calciomercato.com reports that the Diavolo are in the strongest position of the Italian clubs, thanks to their early ground work.

Juventus and Napoli have both refrained from making much movement so far and this means that Allegri’s side would be in the lead to sign him, if they qualify for Europe’s premier competition.

Atletico Madrid and Arsenal both seemed tempted by the idea of the German, too. But, neither are as convinced as what Milan are. So, it may be a battle against themselves to land the midfielder.

  1. He’s not going to be difficult to get. Big teams are only going to sign him for rotation. At Milan, he starts because Jashiri and Ricci have flopped.

  2. This guy came on in the PSG away game and looked far slower and sloppier than everyone else on the field. I watched him closely just because of the Milan rumours. I hope that’s not the version of player we’re hoping to get. If so, we should move to other targets.
