CM: Schedule, injuries, AFCON and Europe – the factors influencing the four Scudetto candidates

By Oliver Fisher -

There are four teams at the moment who above all have pulled away from the chasing pack and appear to be leading the charge for the title.

Calciomercato.com takes a look at Napoli, Milan, Inter and Atalanta who are the current top four in order, with only one point separating the top three. In direct matches, the only two victories are for Milan against Atalanta and for Inter over Napoli, with the Rossoneri drawing the derby and Inter drawing 2-2 with Atalanta.

Luciano Spalletti’s team from now until the halfway point of the season will play two games against the other top four: against Atalanta on Saturday and against the Rossoneri on December 19 at San Siro.

In terms of injuries, Napoli and Milan are the worst hit as the Partenopei have lost Victor Osimhen for a long period, and they also risk not having Insigne, Fabian Ruiz and Koulibaly available for the match against Atalanta, with the latter likely to be out over a month. Stefano Pioli has lost Kjaer, Rebic and Giroud, with the forwards working overtime.

Then there is the Africa Cup of Nations factor, which will see Koulibaly and Anguissa leave Naples (but Osimhen should stay to recover) while Bennacer, Kessie and even Ballo-Touré will leave Milan. In this case, the advantage goes to Inter and Atalanta, who do not have any players in the squad who will leave for AFCON,

Finally, we await the last round of the European competitions to find out which team, in addition to Inzaghi’s, will get out of their group and who each will get in the draw.

  1. At the moment I only see one likely winner which is, unfortunately, Inter. Can’t see Milan or Napoli lasting the season and Atalanta are working miracles to be where they are. I still expect Juventus to manage top 4.
