Tuttosport: Milan and Inter set stadium ultimatum – Cardinale’s thoughts on building alone

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan and Inter are in a hurry and want an answer regarding the new stadium project by the end of the year, according to a report.

We published a deep dive into the stadium situation yesterday, and now Tuttosport (via MilanNews) are reporting that the two Milanese clubs want a final answer on the new stadium by Christmas or they will turn to other plans.

The first public debate will take place on Wednesday which is the beginning of an important process, but Milan and Inter have set a deadline of three months to understand if they can carry out the ‘Cathedral’ project next to the current San Siro, which would be demolished after the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The alternative is to identify another area, because Milan and Inter are convinced that they have done everything possible to make the project work, after the Council of Milano asked for various changes to be made.

Initially it seemed that the expenses for the new stadium could decrease from €1.2bn to €900m but following global inflation, the costs are back to €1.2bn. It will take ten years to amortise these expenses, given that the estimated new income is €120m per year plus ticket sales.

Pillon are the co-ordinators of the public debate, and at the end of the process they will prepare a report to the two clubs, who could turn to another area if something should go wrong, such as the former Falck steelworks in Sesto San Giovanni.

Gerry Cardinale did want to push hard for a stadium alone and therefore without Inter, but for reasons of sustainability he is moving forward with the Nerazzurri.

  1. Sesto is terrible area, there is a reason why sesto mayor wants milan and inter to build there because there isnt investment. Meanwhile if milan goes to sesto and sala ends up selling to inter because they arent making enough with rent fees with milan leaving, inter will be the winner with stadium at the heart of city that they can do what they want in much attractive area.

    1. Heart of the city? Have you been there? I have. Many times and I can say that San Siro is NOT at the heart of the city. And if you look at the map, Sesto isn’t that much further away really.
