AC Milan are expected to sign at least one Italian-trained player this summer to help avoid any trouble with the squad registration process, a report claims.
As has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Milan News) today, the Rossoneri will need to look a bit closer to home when it comes to their signings at some point this summer.
The majority of the players that they are linked with hail from abroad, with names such as Belgium’s Charles De Ketelaere, Morocco’s Hakim Ziyech, Portugal’s Renato Sanches and more.
With the departure of Alessio Romagnoli whose contract expired last week, Milan will have to make sure they do not fall foul of the registration rules for different competitions that require you to have a certain number of players who were trained at Italian clubs.
It is not clear who Milan could pursue and if there is no clear target that is of genuine use to the squad then they could sign a goalkeeper for depth who meets the requirements.

I still dont get it why milan does not even try to renew romagnoli contract.. he is a loyal player and a good defender as well, not superb but worth to keep. I got the feeling that he has personal issue with milan management.
He wanted more game time, which is impossible nowadays with Tomori, Kjaer and Kalulu, and also more money than we were willing to give him. He departed because of irreconcilable disagreements. It was inevitable.
The rules do not REQUIRE you to have italian-trained players. You can register smaller squad if you do not have enough.
While that’s true, having a smaller squad is a very undesirable outcome, especially since we are going to pursue multiple competitions and squad depth is of vital importance.
We currently have a larger team then what we should (20 foreign players, where 17 is max). Therefore we need to drop/sell/loan at least 3
Potential players to be cut from the first part of the season
1- Castillejo
2- Bakayoko
3- Ibrahimovic – can be registered for second part and someone else dropped at that point
4- Ballo-Toure
5- Messias (not renewed)
6- Bennacer (sold)
7- Krunic/Rebic/Tatarusanu
8- Diaz
9- Leao
Baka is the most likely to be cut in addition to Castillejo due to lists and considering his high salary.
Between Baka, Krunic and Adli, one will be sold/loaned. Unless Baka impresses at a ridiculous level during pre-season, he’ll not be registered since we don’t have space in the lists.
If Sanches joins, then also one of Krunic/Adli/Diaz/Bennacer will be gone. I wouldn’t want Bennacer to go, but he’s been asking for a guaranteed starter spot and high salary and last year wasn’t his best (two goals from Porto from dubious challenges against him, etc). If he doesn’t renew, a 40-45 mil offer might be enough to convince Milan to sell him.
At this point, the one that seems safer is Ballo Toure. I’d have bet that we’d have sold him by now and bring an Italian (or U21 player) like Parisi or Udogie (Cambiaso is gone), or even a left-footed DC for a 3-5-2 formation where the LM is one of Rebic/Florenzi/Sale.
We have 5 positions that are being considered (RW, AM, CM, DC, DL). I’d say we’re looking at either buying an instant upgrade (Ziyech), if Messias not confirmed or if price is too expensive, we’ll look at the U21* or Italy-grown players
*U21 is any player who wasn’t 21 at the beginning of 2022

Id sell Saelemakers in a heartbeat though. If they can get 15 mill or so from him, and end Bakayokos loan, then sell Castillejo, maybe another easy way to trim down a foreign spot would be to cancel Tatarusanus contract and then bump up that young keeper we have. (Cant remember his name) to backup. Ballo-Toure has no right to be in that squad considering he is also taking up a foreign spot. Maybe see what good young italians are out there for the LB role and pounce on them.

Caldara is a good player
