CM: Maldini held talks with agent of Lazio star but asking price ended negotiations early

AC Milan went into the 2021-22 season with only Brahim Diaz as a natural attacking midfielder but the situation could have ben very different, a report claims.

Calciomercato.com report that Milan set their sights on Lazio’s Luis Alberto during the summer transfer window and he became the number one target for the playmaker role after Hakan Calhanoglu chose not to renew his contract and to move across the Navigli to join rivals Inter instead.

The interest in Alberto was very concrete, to the extent that technical director Paolo Maldini had a meeting with the Spaniard’s agent to discuss the possibility of a deal being done, given that the player was at that point open to trying a new challenge away from the capital.

However, it was Lazio’s request for €40m to sell the 29-year-old that essentially ended any chances of a real and concrete negotiation between the two clubs ever starting, as Milan simple did not have the budget for that.
