MN: Numbers show Leao is more effective in dribbling than PSG star Mbappe

By Oliver Fisher -

Rafael Leao showed all of his dribbling qualities during last night’s win against Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico, and his numbers make for some impressive comparisons.

Leao beat his man regularly last night and got himself an assist for Olivier Giroud’s equaliser as the Portuguese winger was among the most involved in the game and certainly one of the most dangerous in attack.

MilanNews writes how Leao is top of Serie A for completed dribbles and is third in Europe behind Allan Saint-Maximin and Kylian Mbappé. The former Lille man has completed a dribble 91 times this season, with only 56 failing out of 147 attempted.

Mbappé is second in this particular ranking and has failed 75 out of 176 attempts, meaning the success rate of Leao is 61.9%, that of the PSG winger is 57.3%, while that of the Newcastle star is 60.8%. It just shows how he is learning to channel his pace and dribbling for the right moments.

  1. I have said before that leao is fantastic player he have qualities like dribbling speeds, abilities to shoot with both leg’s and accurate parsing.

    1. Improve his shooting AND passing. His crosses never seem to find own players. I think the pass to Giroud’s equalizer was the first pass this year Leao got to another Milan-player in the box this year.

  2. This overconfidence of him being something is the reason he might not renew. He is nothing compared to mbappe. This records will only be justified when his scoring, finishing, and wining mentality make a mark on his team.

    1. Yep. In the end, no one will remember a player who can go pass the defender but fails to deliver the end product (goal, assist, whatever).

I’d prefer a player who contributes to the attacks by either creating a chance or scoring than just getting past the defender and then donates the ball to the opponent. Even Krunic is in a sense more useful as he ALWAYS turns around and passes the ball backwards to own players. That way the team doesn’t lose possession – unlike with Leao’s mistargeted passes/crosses.
