Milan look to the transfer market to bolster Scudetto dream with Inter breathing down their necks

AC Milan currently share the lead with city rival Inter. With one match less than the Nerazzurri, Milan remains title contender number one according to the Italian press.

With the title hunt in sight, the Rossoneri board have decided to bring a few reinforcements to the San Siro. If Football Italia is to be believed, three reinforcements will be presented at Milan in the near future. Mario Mandzukic will be brought in as a free agent in the attacking department, while Soualiho Meité and Fikayo Tomori will strengthen the midfield and defence. Meité (ex-Zulte Waregem) comes over from Torino. Tomori is rented from Chelsea. In this way, Milan seems to be responding to the current – and relatively small – core of players. In recent weeks, the number of injuries at the Italians made it clear that there was room for a new face in every line, and Technical Director Paolo Maldini is not letting it grow.

AC Milan have had a very disappointing week. On Tuesday, the Rossoneri were eliminated in the Italian Cup against city rivals Internazionale, a few days after a heavy league defeat against Atalanta. Nevertheless, the Milanese remain on course for the title. Milan are still leading the Serie A, but the difference with first pursuer Inter is only two points. To increase their chances of winning the title, Milan would like to strengthen their squad in the final quarter of the season.

Tuttosport says that the employer of Red Devils Alexis Saelemaekers has his sights set on Douglas Costa. The Brazilian is currently on loan at Bayern Munich, but rarely gets a chance to play. The German champion would therefore not be unwilling to break the rental agreement. But then there is another stumbling block for Milan. Costa is owned by … Juventus, a direct competitor. It will therefore not be easy to find an agreement with the Old Lady. The Milanese would like to make an effort financially. The club would like to offer him a salary of 6 million euro, which makes Costa the third best earner at San Siro.

The Italian Serie A is becoming more and more unpredictable in the last few years as more and more teams are able to challenge Juve. AC Milan and Internazionale both did badly in the title battle in the Serie A. The Rossoneri went down heavily  against Atalanta without the suspended Saelemaekers. At San Siro, they were beaten 3-0. Inter, however, failed to capitalise on the defeat, as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Udinese.

Milan were found out at home by Atalanta fairly quickly. Romero made it 0-1 midway through the first half, and after just a few minutes in the second half Milan were already facing a double deficit after Ilicic converted a penalty. Zapata added some extra venom to Atalanta’s victory in the final quarter.

Inter, with Romelu Lukaku in the field for the entire match, could have drawn level with Milan, but failed to win against Udinese. It remained 0-0. Inter remains two points behind their city rival. Milan is therefore certain of the winter title, but it could not take it in style. It promises to be an exciting second half of the season.
