GdS: Milan revise Maignan offer downwards – the four replacements being scouted

AC Milan are having to give serious thought to replacing Mike Maignan, given that at present there is no agreement over the renewal of his contract.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that the hope is that Maignan agrees to sign the contract with Milan and that, as captain, he reaffirms his bond with the club. An agreement had been reached in recent months at €5m net per year plus bonuses, though it was never signed.

As the weeks went on, combined with some disappointing performances from the Frenchman, have led the club to reflect and revise their offer downwards. Now it is a €4.5m per year take it or leave it offer, with an extension until 2028 or 2029.

An answer must arrive soon because the Devils cannot afford to keep Maignan until his contract expires and then lose him for free in the summer of 2026. Thus, the hunt for potential replacements runs parallel.

Back to France

The Maignan file will be one of the most urgent on the new sporting director’s desk, but the current management have moved forward with the process by scouting established goalkeepers ready for a stage like Serie A.

Ironically, Mike’s replacement could come from the same city – Lille – that he came from in 2021. Lucas Chevalier is one option, a keeper who has been in the senior national team for a few months, but has not yet made his debut. He is out of contract in 2027 and is an idol for the fans of Lille.

He also played alongside Maignan, with whom he won the league title in 2020-21. In a few months the 23-year-old player could inherit his locker at Milanello. He is valued at €30-40m, because several teams are following him.

Alternative names

Bart Verbruggen of Brighton is another possibility. The Dutchman is someone that his compatriot Tijjani Reijnders knows well, but Brighton paid €20m to get him from Anderlecht for him in the summer of 2023, when Roberto De Zerbi was their coach and Robert Sanchez was sold to Chelsea.

Verbruggen has grown a lot, and his price has (perhaps) more than doubled. It risks being an even more complicated operation than Chevalier because Bayern Munich and Manchester United have asked for information.

Senne Lammens of Antwerp and Marco Carnesecchi of Atalanta are also monitoried. He is one of the possible sales that La Dea could make, but he too will not be sold at a discounted price. Translated: the money arriving from Maignan would have to be reinvested in full.

Wonder why players underperfom and look dissatisfied in this club? Doesn’t matter if you’re the pillar season after season, if you hit a period of bad form you are a persona non grata and can f*ck off. That’s the corporate way of handling the business. That’s the “americanization” this Wall Street greaseball talked about and successfully implemented in just 2 seasons.

This club reeks of toxicity. Disgusting.

    1. I don’t agree. Maignan contract downgrade is reflective of his poor performances and decline since we won the scudetto. As a matter of fact his last good season was during our scudetto title season.

He is often injury prone with mysterious injuries that no one knows about and his from has been pretty bad.

Both Maignan and Theo should be sold for their poor performances over the last 2-3 seasons.

      1. Yea but everyone’s form is on the slide progressively since the Scudetto season. What does that mean? Cut everyone’s wages?

Leao got renewed while you could argue his skillset hadn’t. Mike has been inconsistent, true, as has the rest of the team. But look at where the club is and how it’s run…

improve the management and direction and watch everyone play better.

  2. Even the greatest of goal keepers have had their share of bad seasons. Why do this when the whole team is virtually dead. What difference will the 500k do to the budget? Cheap club. When their is underperforming, we refuse to recognize that leao has never dropped back to help this team defensively. I watched inter vs Bayern n it’s amazing how each player dies for the team. Leao is one player who needs to be sold, he is no great player

    1. Remember how Hakan, romagnoli go from Milan ? They reduce the offer 500k. Hahah. Similar with Maignan & Theo now. Offering take it or leave it. I think the Milan management wants maignan go from milan

      1. Calhanoglu wanted 6M, we were offering 5M, and it was also before we won the scudetto. Different situation and facts.

    2. Yeah but none of them have injury prone like maiganan who seems to have issues with staying fit as a goalkeeper. Let’s also not forget his mysterious injury that took him out for a long time and no one knows what happened to him which based on rumors he is a known drug addict.

  3. You don’t have to far away from french / premier league GK. We already have big talent from torriani. Why not play him. From our primavera, low budget, big talent. That’s redbird want it right ?

    1. I agree. There are other young Italian options too. Elia Caprile would be a good and relatively cheap get. Carnesecchi will have 1 year left this summer. Meanwhile, Alex Meret is out of contract on July 1, so that would be a free transfer and he’s highly experienced, and at 28 still has at least one 5 year contract’s worth of peak ability left in the tank.

  4. Every player ,every star, that maldini brought will leave, nobody will sign a new contract, they all feel betrayed by menagement and thats the reason of their underperforming

      1. Lowballing salary offers? LOL. Are you suggesting Theo & MM16 deserve more than they’re being offered? Calabria deserved a raise? 😀 😀 😀 😀

        1. I don’t believe calabria was asking for a raise, if it he was it wasn’t much, but he is much better than the rb we have now. Walker declined harshly, royal is royal, and Jimenez isn’t a full back he’s more of a winger.

        2. You have an article just here stating they had agreed 5 millions and now they’re lowballing offering 4.5

          Read the damn article.

          1. Mike was offered 5M€ and he started stalling. I don’t see anything wrong in lowering the offer when the performances have been poor and the guy isn’t showing willingness to close the deal.

    1. And he is like 6ft 8inches tall. Lol. He is underrated and would be a good option in addition to Bologna’s keeper Ravaglia.

    2. I doubt he would leave, he’s pretty comfortable at torino and if we’re gonna play more possessive and playing out the back he wouldn’t be a great choice. His distribution isn’t great but he is an amazing shot stopper. Reminds me of de gea

  5. Torriani should get his chance if Mike leaves. And we have another French talent on his way in the Primavera and Future team already, who is the same level as Torriani. Lets bet on all this talent that we have, and if they need some more time here and there, then we have a very experienced and reliable Sportiello to take the spot for a few games

    1. I would give torriani another year to bulk up before giving him the n1 or n2. He’s very lanky and could get easily bullied on corners and crosses. Unless he bulks up during the summer break.

  6. This summer is the last opportunity for us to make a good profit with selling of Maignan. He is in evident decline so this summer is our last chance. Cash in and move on. There are plenty goalkeepers better and younger than Maignan.

    1. Maybe if Dida was sold in 2023 Milan would have won even more championships. You have no idea how it would have played out.

  7. Carnasechi 40m+
Lammers is easier is he worth it?
    Chevalier 40m+
    Verbruggen 50m+
We know you aren’t going to give money and you will bring 1. Old for now replacement 33+
    2. Loaned Old for now replacement 30+
    3. A known but not going to be worth it
    4. Someone from the league but in the last positions of the league

  8. The older a goalkeeper is, the better they perform unlike other players in other positions.

Having said this, I believe there is still more for Mike to deliver, he is having a bad season like every players in the club is having.

Hopefully the contract can be returned to 5m and we get over everything at once, he could be one of those players we let go and later regret.

And lastly to many fans saying he is injury prone – when last has he got injured?

  9. Maignans PERFORMANCE THIS YEAR HAS BEEN PRETTY DAMN GOOD CONSIDERING HE HAS VERY LITTLE DEFENCE IN FRONT OF HIM !! !! SIGN HIM….DON T LOSE HIM …….
