Milan mayor slams ‘absurd’ San Siro constraint and highlights ‘economic damage’

By Isak Möller -

The San Siro saga has taken yet another turn. After AC Milan and Inter decided to abandon the project, the Milan mayor Beppe Sala is now desperate to find a solution, branding the constraint as ‘absurd’.

The constraint that Sala is referring to is for the second ring of San Siro, which will turn 70 years in 2024. If that constraint gets put into place, then it would be illegal to demolish the stadium and renovation would also be more complicated.

Speaking to a council commission on the San Siro issues, as cited by Calcio e Finanza, Milan mayor Beppe Sala branded the constraint as ‘absurd’ given the economic damage it will have on the Milano residents.

“On the constraint, our will is to appeal the decision of the Ministry of Culture, which cites the existence of a cultural interest for the second ring. Our offices and the legal profession are working in this direction.

“We will then report to the government and the Court of Auditors that there is economic damage for the council and therefore, for Milanese taxpayers due to this constraint, which in my opinion is absurd. This constraint is a strong threat to the property values within the Milan council and therefore also to the Milanese people,” he stated.

Milan and Inter will of course be wondering where this attitude was before they decided to abandon the project. It’s believed that the Nerazzurri might reconsider renovating the San Siro stadium, but the Rossoneri are now focused on San Donato.

  1. Lol terrible terrible way to go about business. This Mayor is such crap.
I guess it’s so old it became a cultural and heritage building? Well maybe they shouthave thought about this waaay ahead of time smh

  2. Can’t believe in all these decades nobody bothered to buy it. Lack of vision from owners is/was very obvious.
Why can uk have stadiums old af but still somewhat modern and capable of meeting the cl/fifa criteria?

  3. Would have loved to stay and modernize it but this guy and the city have been holding us up for too long. They just want the revenue to mainly go to the city and not the club which is bs and is holding italian clubs back financially. Sorry mayor, too little too late.

  4. If they rate top leagues by stadiums, Italian league won’t make top 7.

League that has stadiums that looks like college stadiums 😤 it sucks and at the same time embarrassing honestly.

  5. They thought AC Milan would give up and stay in a 100 year old stadium alone without Inter while they go outside

    Thanks Redbird for moving on

    1. Everyone will forget the emotional attachment with San Siro when we will play in the most beautiful stadium in Europe without Shinter.

  6. It is not ACM problem anymore. Lets focus build new stadium on san donato and let IM renovating / rent san siro. This mayor sala only want ACM rent stadium forever from city council, just ignore whatever he say and move to san donato, not worth renovating san siro , the cost more expensive than build new stadium due to old structure

    1. Dont forget we still need to pay the rent and shared the revenue after renovating it. So just let Inter sink there if they want lol

  7. This mayor is a communist progressive idiot. Like all this delusional “green” ecologist freaks from “European Green Party” and “Renew Europe” political group from EU. Ecologism is the new word for comunism. They want us to live again like our ancestors in caves and eat insects and worms.

  8. At this rate the San Siro won’t be able to host matches for Milan in the 2032 Euros simply because they cannot renovate it to get it up to spec.

Guess who profits from this, being the only up and coming, modern, UEFA approved stadium at San Donato?

Gerry has been playing 5D chess whilst Sala can’t even win at Checkers.

  9. they (the city council) just give you false hope every year with their b*llsh*t.. they act like they will let us to modernize/build san siro but then they’ll throw problems in the middle of the process that will stall the project for a year or more so that we stay at san siro and they will still got the stadium revenue..
