Giroud hails ‘important’ Napoli victory and admits he ‘hopes to win something this year’

By Mitchell Wilks -

Olivier Giroud has admitted the importance of Milan’s 1-0 victory away to Napoli towards their Serie A title hopes, describing the squad as ‘ambitious’ in their pursuit of silverware.

The Frenchman scored the all-important winner in Naples, bagging his first away goal for Milan and securing a vital three points that saw Milan return to the top of the table after a handful of disappointing results.

Milan looked strong despite the 1-0 score, limiting their title rivals to few chances in a game that saw the two sides crucially locked on 57 points, with top spot available for the winner.

Speaking after the game, quoted by MilanNews, Giroud admitted the three points were ‘worth a lot because it was a match against a rival for the Scudetto’.

He added, contextualising the result in terms of the title race: “It wasn’t decisive but it was important to win.

“I don’t want to talk about the Scudetto but we hope to win something this year. The Italian Cup, the Scudetto… We are ambitious, we go again and again until the end.”

The 35-year-old also played down speculation about his role following the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic after an injury layoff, reiterating the importance of his experience among the squad’s younger players.

  1. Giroud gives the best interviews. LOVE him.

How was he able to play after getting that HUGE gash on his leg from Koulibaly’s cleats/studs — that should’ve been a red card IMO!
