Milan on verge of third straight Champions League berth – what would secure it

Roma and Atalanta’s defeats against Fiorentina and Inter respectively have simplified AC Milan’s mission to get into the top four.

Napoli, Lazio and Inter have already secured their spot in the next edition of the Champions League, with the Nerazzurri being the most recent to do so after their 3-2 victory against La Dea at San Siro last night.

There is one spot left therefore, and Milan could secure it tonight with only a point against Juventus by virtue of the fact they are three points ahead of Atalanta and four ahead of Roma, while Juve are five behind but Milan have head-to-head advantage after beating the Bianconeri 2-0 back in October.

If Milan lose tonight by one goal then they would still qualify for the top four as long as they get at least a draw against Hellas Verona in the final round. They could actually get away with losing both games, if Juve fail to beat Udinese in the last game of the season.

The combinations therefore are as follows:

➤ Win or draw against Juventus
➤ Lose against Juventus but win against Verona
➤ Lose against Juventus by less than two goals and draw against Verona
➤ Lose both games but Juventus fail to beat Udinese
