There is one less suitor in the race for Oliver Glasner as Bayer Leverkusen have today announced their head coach appointment.
A statement on the official website of the Bundesliga club reads as follows: “Bayer 04 Leverkusen have appointed Carles Martínez Novell as the new head coach. The 42-year-old Spaniard worked for FC Toulouse in the French Ligue 1 until the end of the season.

“Martínez finished last term in ninth place with the club from the south of France. He will take over the Werkself on 1 July 2026 and has signed a contract to 30 June 2028.
“Martínez, whose contract with Toulouse expires at the end of the month, succeeds Kasper Hjulmand at Leverkusen, who is leaving the club after one season.”
Path clear for Glasner?
It was reported by various sources earlier in the week that Oliver Glasner was also in the frame for the Leverkusen job. He supposedly met the German club to discuss plans, but then the rumours about in-depth discussions with Milan grew at a greater volume.
There has been quite a bit of overlap in the searches of Leverkusen and Milan for a new manager. Die Werkself were also reported to be in the running for Andoni Iraola alongside the Rossoneri, but he turned both down for Liverpool. Filipe Luis ended up being another mutual link too.
Now, it seems as the Milan are the only concrete remaining path for Glasner to go down unless there is a late curveball. As a reminder, further meetings are expected after initial positive talks.
