Tuttosport: Milan rightly feel aggrieved by penalty decisions – the data compared to others

AC Milan have not had the rub of the green this season when it comes to penalty kicks, as they actually have the worst record among the top clubs in Serie A.

Calciomercato.com report how Milan were again left deeply angry after the game against Bologna on Saturday not only because of the result but also and above all for the incidents that went against them.

There were two penalty shouts: the first was for a stamp on Rebic in the first half that was virtually stonewall, while the second came at the end after the ball hit Lucumi’s outstretched arm after a ricochet with Vranckx. However, neither were given and VAR did not even ask Massa to take a look.

The two penalty appeals in Bologna came at the end of a week already shaken by other situations, such as in the previous league match when Theo Hernandez had his foot stepped on by Fazzini right on the edge of the box in the 0-0 draw with Empoli.

The first leg against Napoli further accentuated the tensions as Rrahmani dragged Krunic to the ground off the ball while a corner was coming in, then Saelemaekers got his legs tangled with Lobotka while the midfielder was not playing the ball.

As highlighted by Tuttosport, none of the ‘big clubs’ in Serie A have had fewer penalties in their favour than Milan. The Rossoneri have had three, which came against Udinese on matchday one San Siro, against Sampdoria at the Luigi Ferraris in September and a month ago against Udinese at the Dacia Arena.

In all three cases the VAR called the referee to the on field review. In comparison, Inter and Juventus each have five, Lazio have seven like Napoli, while Atalanta have been given eight penalties and Roma nine.

At the same time, no team has had more penalties given against them than the Rossoneri (five versus the three of Inter and Roma, two of Juve, Atalanta and Napoli and the one of Lazio).

  1. Maybe we don’t put ourselves in enough positions to really warrant penaltys. Atalanta has a much higher pace than we do. Maybe that’s why they get so many penaties. Milan doesn’t spend very much time inside the area in my opinion and that’s probably why we don’t get as many penalties.

A couple seasons ago we got so many penalties. Kessie scored many and Zlatan missed many :p

  2. Well, it was obvious from last year that there’s something going on. These are the struggles of being an honest club.
If Barca could pay refs for years without being bothered, imagine all the things that are happening that we’ll never know about, especially in Italy.
