AC Milan are in league action this lunchtime as they entertain Parma, yet a lot of the chatter once again related to Santiago Gimenez.
As a quick recap, Milan launched a first official offer for Gimenez in recent days that was not deemed sufficient by Feyenoord. The Dutch club are understandably holding out for the amount they want, given they do not wish to lose him mid-season.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Milan are preparing a ‘new official bid’ for Gimenez which will be ‘sent next week’. A contract until June 2028 plus an option for another year has been ‘agreed in principle’ as the Mexican striker is ‘keen on the move’.
Matteo Moretto of Relevo confirms that a ‘second official offer’ will soon be put forward. The Rossoneri are ‘ready to make a significant financial effort’ and hope to get closer to Feyenoord’s requests.
The former Cruz Azul man has reached an agreement with Milan over a three-and-a-half-year contract plus an optional one. For Giménez, he sees this as an ‘important career opportunity’ and one that he wishes to seize now.
Then there is the front page of Record, a big sports newspaper in Mexico. Their front page is dedicated to Gimenez’s move, with the headline: ‘Sera porque te amo’, an obvious remix of the Milan song ‘Sarà perché ti amo’.
Record adds: “Milan, the club with the second-most Champions League wins in the world, has sent a formal offer for Gimenez. These are crucial hours for the future of Bebote [a nickname], who will take Abraham’s place in Conceicao’s squad.”
They go on to state that the first bid was €30m, a figure far from the €40m that Feyenoord intend to obtain. Furthermore, they speak of an agreement in principle over personal terms already being in place.
Watch another team highjack our target like Zirkzee
We sending Tammy back to Roma? Or does “taking his place” simply imply Tammy would be removed from the UCL squad
In any case I’m skeptical we can push this move through in Jan, more likely Feyenoord will compromise end of season
Im sceptical if he can replicate his form from Dutch league to Serie A but it seems like a calculated bet. i.e. for every Antony costing 100m, there is likes of R9 that came via PSV, Van Basten or Ruud Van Niestroy etc. If he turns out to be half as good as them then he will be a solid signing. Tijani showed good players can adapt from Dutch league!
Absolutely, there’s no guarantee someone with a good eridivisie record will succeed in Serie A, but we aren’t in a financial position to wait until they become the finished article having adapted to the league. like you said occasionally can find an absolute gem ill add Romario, Luis Suarez to your list
Given Gimenez has a footballing family, and Italian passport, we gotta hope he won’t be an absolute flop, and even a decent eye for goal will add something we currently don’t have ie a clinical finisher.
So I’m hoping the transfer goes through but not expecting it, unless his agent can pressure Feyenoord I don’t see why they’d sell for a reasonable price
Well said. Unlikely Feyenoord will sell their prized asset mid season but he has the right traits to succeed i.e. good work trait, goal poaching instincts, times his runs into the box well, good with his head, good hold up play and only 23 years old. In saying that his national team record for CF is horrible. Maybe that is a sign for us to consider before dropping 35-40m on him.
His national team record suffers because Mexico lacks quality players, with the majority of the squad coming from Liga MX, which is widely regarded as a poor league. Only a handful of Mexican players compete outside of the league, particularly abroad.
If someone can find me a better striker (not winger) under 30 year old in the 30-40 million range, then I’d love to hear who. The EPL will pay 70 for Sesko/Gyökeres level players and provide much higher wages. If we had that type of money we would have helped Tonali. This guy helps us finish top 4 and so next years UCL group stage payouts offset some of the cost.
