Selling Reijnders, though not as emotional, is seen as very similar to Tonali’s departure. A star in midfield that the club could build around, sold for money, rather than because they had asked to leave.

However, Tonali’s exit allowed Reijnders to arrive, so it had some positives, arguably. So, the club will look at that summer for inspiration.
Tonali inspires the summer
Many would hope that with a significant cash injection, the Rossoneri would go for a big player, like Tonali, for example. However, it seems it will be done in a different way. As TMW journalist Antonello Gioia reports, the same approach could be taken, where the Diavolo buy an unknown who is ready.
So, when Tonali left, the three that arrived, of note, were Reijnders, Yunus Musah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. All three have had differing spells in Rossonero, of course, but it seems with more clarity, it could again be the plan.
The profiles which Milan want to add have already been clarified. So, now it is the difficult job of finding the players. After all, with the failings of last season’s mercatos, more Musah-like additions would be terrible for all parties.
Having failed once, though, you would hope the Rossoneri get it right this time around.
With Reijnders money you can buy Rovella and Rabiot. Sell Loftus and Musah, buy Xhaka. Modric is a done deal. We would have pretty good midfield.

Easier said than done. Clubs like Milan have huge problems with selling unwanted players with full contracts like Loftus. He earns quite well, lives in Milano and gets to be part of the big team, even though he might not be playing.
Top clubs who can afford his salary are going to laugh on the idea of signing him, and mediocre teams don’t want an average baller with big salary. And also he just might not want to go to play in some Brighton or other West Ham, when he gets to be part of AC Milan.
Kick out all of the rotten apples who don’t event want to play here anymore, like Theo, Maignan, Leao and sign some Italian players with heart to play. Don’t buy another random pokemons from foreign leagues. Simple as that. Milan needs to be Italian to be back on top.

Well, the performance of Reijnders alone effectively recouping the Tonali transfer fee cannot be seen as a failure.
Musah hasn’t been a failure either, he has the potential but has been constantly played out of position just like we did with CDK.
Musah needs to be sent out on loan to play, develop and master his preferred position.
Only RLC hasn’t been successful so far, missing almost 40 mathes due to injury leaves little for his performance to be judged. I hope he leaves too.

Post-Tonali moves have spectacularly failed so unless there’s a change in mentality I don’t know how this is going to be any different
It’s time for Milan to reset the squad, similar to what Maldini did in 2019, 3 years before winning the Scudetto. The 2019 team’s cycle has ended, and a great management is shown by how it constantly able to rebuild AND maintain success.
IMO, the next cycle must again be focused around young players, who should always be given confidence and support not only by the club but also by fans over the next few years, along with several leading figures, similar to what Ibrahimovic, Giroud and Kjaer provided. My preference for the squad, in a 433 / 4321 formation, would be:

We failed with the tonali money. Id have rather kept tonali 100 times over. No replacement for losing the future capitano and it wasnt even like were a better team bc were actually worse.
Incorrect. There is a lot more depth and overall quality now. What many people forget is the scudetto was won with Ibrahimovic and Giroud contributing, peak Leao, Theo, Kessie and Bennacer. Kessi left and Ibrahimovic and Giroud were always short-time because of their age. Teams rarely win back to back titles in competitive leagues. It’s very difficult to maintain a level of consistency. Despite Salah, Allison, Van Dijk and TAA, it took Liverpool another 5 years before they won a second league title in the modern era.
