CM: Milan rejected striker with 20 goals this season to sign Origi – the background

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are struggling in the centre-forward department at the moment as nobody seems capable of helping Olivier Giroud catch his breath, and some background has emerged from last summer.

Calciomercato.com recall how the Milan management chose to go all-in on the signing of Divock Origi on a free transfer after his deal with Liverpool expired with the aim of giving Stefano Pioli an experienced alternative to Giroud.

However, so far he has amassed just 781 minutes of action across all competition with only six starts in the process, scoring just two goals. It is obvious to say this is a contribution far from what the expectations were for a player potentially in his prime.

Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara very much believed that Origi could put his physical problems behind him – the ones that troubled him during the end of his time at Anfield – and thus gave him a contract until 30 June 2025 worth €4m net per season or €5.2m gross, therefore almost €16m in total.

The report claims that Milan opted to sign the Belgian after having been offered Alexandre Lacazette, who scored 71 goals in the five seasons he spent at Arsenal. Maldini and Massara politely declined the offer, allowing the Frenchman to return to Olympique Lyonnais.

How has he done back at his former club? Under Laurent Blanc, the striker has 20 goals and five assists in the first 27 games of the season in all competitions, so it is safe to say there might be a touch of regret about the decisions made last summer.

  1. This guy playing for us would have 5 gols at most what we need is a young strong and fast striker not more old and past is prime striker!

  2. There is no any Reason thar our mind of Football that is Acceptable of signing D Origi.
It is total Desuster and Primitives of A Galliani Later Stages.
And there is any Club except ASIAN Teams
Who wants to sign him if to sell.
I Give Immidate and Important Advice ro my beloved acmilan team to Traminate D Origi Contract and sign M Retegui of Tigre by his Saved Cost and i am sure he will refuse.

  3. Even if ibra play in ligue 1 , he can score more than 10 goal with his age 42. We dont need old striker anymore, we need young quality striker that can build up atack not only waiting on the box example : julian alvarez, koulo muani, isaak, balogun. But of course we dont have budget just to sign one of them , in the end we will stuck with giroud,origi,lazetic/colombo for our striker

    1. But everyone was in here bashing on him… some of us who called for his signing were met with harsh keyboard football experts here.

So let’s be happy he slipped, same way I’m somehow hoping for Leao to slip too… maybe someday they will appreciate him despite his inconsistencies.

  4. Origi was always crap and always injured. So honestly I think our management were trying to be too clever.I dont know what they saw in him.

Dybala was the free attacker to sign. A recent league MVP and a world class number 10! That was just stupid. Especially when the alternative was 35m on CDK. Money we needed to spend elsewhere.

    Enzo Fernandes 10m
    Alvarez 20m
    Dybala Free

Imagine the team we should have

    1. Maldini & Massara = Dumb & Dumber
When you have almost no money, you don’t blow it on an unproven kid and a constantly injured bench warmer. You don’t need to be a genius to know that.

      1. Hindsight is always 20/20.

I’m pretty sure if we missed out on CDK and he turns out to be a star for Leeds, you’d be calling them dumb too, right?

The reasoning behind Origi was actually justified. The alternative at the time was Dybala or Belotti. Dybala was a no brainer if he wasn’t injury prone. And I am pretty sure you would also start a riot and calling them dumb again when that injury happens – why buy injury prone players?! (as you did actually state here).

Next was Belotti, a self proclaimed Milan fan. However as it turns out, he didn’t even have much luck either in Rome. I believe the contribution rate is almost equal to Origi so, there’s some sort of justification there. Compared to Belotti, Origi has some sort of European pedigree and did perform well and had respectable goal contribution despite his limited appearances.

At the time, CDK was probably the right gamble. If it doesn’t turns out well, there’s at least some sort of resale value there. And, considering his age, it is a gamble in which the outcome might yet be decided

This slander against Maldini’s name has to stop ffs. If there’s someone who would surely have the best intention for Milan, I am pretty sure he’d be the first name on the list.

  5. Pls M&M. Go get this Nigerian sensation frim Gent before they snap him up. His name is Gift Orban. He jyst scored a hatrick fir Gent today in the uefa conference . He scores goals at ease.
