Matteo Moretto has given a further update on Rafael Leao’s renewal, revealing his belief that he might not earn more money from it.
On Tuesday, Daniele Longo reported that the management want to reward Leao with a contract extension. His current deal expires in 2028, having last renewed in 2022-23, so there is no immediate sense of panic like there is with other players like Mike Maignan.

Then, Matteo Moretto confirmed that the Rossoneri are speaking with the Portuguese’s camp about a contract extension. Naturally, one would presume that a pay rise will be part of it, but now some further claims have suggested otherwise.
Salary ceiling to remain?
Matteo Moretto responded to a question on X about Leao’s renewal. It started from the notion that Milan will struggle to sign Dusan Vlahovic because of their salary ceiling, with a fan wondering what a possible new deal for Rafa will mean for that ceiling.
“From what I understand it won’t be raised. Maybe they’ll change the structure between the fixed base and bonuses, maybe they’ll ‘facilitate’ some bonuses, maybe some add-ons,” he said.
“A while ago I wrote that they would raise the salary cap (precisely because I knew about Rafa’s possible renewal) but that was the imprecision because to date they have denied it.”
Nkunku and Rabbiot earn 9.5 million, 4 more than Leao, the cap was broken this summer. This blah blah from journalists is pure nonsense.
