Sky: Milan open talks over Schalke defender but face ‘strong competition’ from Liverpool

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are in negotiations with Schalke over the signing of young centre-back Malick Thiaw but face competition from Liverpool, according to a report.

According to Manuele Baiocchini of Sky (via MilanNews), a new defensive target has emerged for Milan as the Rossoneri have made contact with Schalke 04 over Malick Thiaw. The 20-year-old is regarded as a top defensive prospect in Germany, but Milan are not alone in their admiration.

Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are pressing ahead in talks with the 2. Bundesliga side but they are not the only club interested, because the journalist also specifically mentions ‘strong competition’ from Liverpool.

Thiaw is performing well in the second division and has quite an interesting background from an international eligibility point of view. He was called up by Finland U17s, but did not play for them, and was then summoned to represent Germany U21s for the 2021 UEFA European U21 Championship. He can also represent Senegal at national team level.
