CM: Milan scouting striker who is close to Italy call-up but face competition

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are keen admirers of Mateo Retegui who could soon pledge his allegiance to the Italian national team, a report claims.

Calciomercato.com confirm that Roberto Mancini has called Retegui up for the preliminary squad ahead of the games later this month, and he could get even closer to Italy too. The 23-year-old is owned by Boca Juniors but is on loan at Tigre, where he scored 19 goals in 2022 and six in six so far this season.

Milan believe he has characteristics they are looking for as he is a young centre-forward with potential, he has a powerful physique (standing 1.86m tall) and of course an an eye for goal. The Rossoneri scouts are watching him in South America to see how he develops, and there could be news in the coming months.

However, Udinese are keen on him and there is strong competition from some Spanish clubs too, even if Retegui would like to follow up on his probable call-up to the national team with a move to Serie A.

The Argentine press have mentioned an €18m release clause, with a contract expiring in 2024 that could help. Francesco Totti wanted to sign him for Roma a couple of years ago, but now it seems his future could be red and black.

    1. A little bit naive, don’t you think? Every team scouts many players with only a small fraction being purchased. That is conducting due diligence and is not uncommon.
