QS: Milan’s striker search reduced to two names with Serie A star the favourite

The race to become AC Milan’s next striker has already had numerous twists and turns, with names coming and going.

The strikers’ fast continues. To find the last goal by a Milan forward, you have to go back 60 days, to Rafael Leao in Cremona. To remember Christian Pulisic’s last goal , you have to rewind the league to the end of 2025, the 3-0 win against Verona.

A flash in the pan came from the German Niclas Fullkrug against Lecce (on January 18th), a surge from Christopher Nkunku in Bologna (on February 3rd) and nothing more. Santiago Gimenez – who has been sidelined all winter with an ankle problem – hasn’t scored since last September.

Fix needed

The numbers in the second half of the season are merciless: the forwards’ tally is paltry, just five goals (two from Leao and Nkunku, one from Fullkrug), the same as Parma. Only the strikers at Lecce (four goals), Cremonese (three), and Verona (three) have done worse.

As Quotidiano Sportivo (via MilanNews) recall, a slew of names have been floated in recent days. There’s the opportunity to bring in a proven and reliable player like Robert Lewandowski on a free transfer, while the same chance exists with Dusan Vlahovic if he doesn’t renew.

There’s the possibility of taking advantage of a convenient deal for Goncalo Ramos, but QS claim the selection process has been narrowed down to just two names: Moise Kean of Fiorentina and Alexander Sorloth of Atletico Madrid.

The former is listed as the main target: he has a €62m release clause that can be activated until mid-July, but his value has dropped. The latter would like to find more playing time than he is getting currently with Atlético, and given his age (30) would cost a bit less.

  1. We (will) need them both if we mean bussiness and even then it wouldn’t be a 100% guarantee because there is work to be done in all parts of the squad, every single segment (except for the position of GK) craves for the (and a heavy one indeed, that must be added and emphasized 2) rebuild and reconstruction.

      1. I’m glad my mum can be mentioned in conversations such as these.

Osimhen earns €15m annually, the remaining is image rights.

I remember when Lukaku was available, fans here kept talking everyday “how can we afford his salary?” only for Napoli to effectively negotiate and signed him.

Top players don’t come really cheap, we are at a point were we have to make deliberate decisions if we aim to improve as a club or remain an average team, and if we truly want to aim high, conversation about players like Osimhen who already knows the league must be had instead of splashing €40m on a player like Nkunku or Jashari who do not visibly upgrade the quality of the team and continue to warm the bench.

        1. What have you learned from the previous 4 summer mercatos? Does it look like this club is aiming to “improve as a club or remain an average team”?

We’re owned by a fund whose primary objectives are financial ones, not sporting ones based on last 4 years… They have us getting excited over a “return” to CL where Milan belonged all along after a season so botched it is ludicrous. Increased salary caps? LOL!!! in our dreams.

          1. A club that focuses purely on financial goals would not spend €40m on single players like Tomori, De Ketelaere, Nkunku and Jashari.

Actually according to available data which are easily verifiable, AC have been the biggest spender in the mercato in the last five seasons. But because as a club our transfer policy and strategy is in shambles, the money spent does not leave anything to be desired. But in terms of spending, we actually have little to fault the ownership over.

Imagine if we weren’t just signing players for signing sake and making quality strategic signings in this period.

If we can add only to or three really quality additions every season, we would have built a really formidable team by now.

Imagine using the Mateta funds to sign Sorloth.

Selling Morata, Colombo, Nkunku and Gimenez and using that money to sign Osimhen and Lewandowski and bring back Camarda.
            We would have:

            Osimhen
            Sorloth
            Lewandowski
            Camarda

This would have solved our CF troubles.

          2. The problem is, the management in charge is completely and utterly incompetent to have signed most of the useless players the last four years… So again, I have little faith that these same clowns will find the right players to elevate the quality of this club to a point of not getting embarrassed in Europe next season …

You keep bringing up Osi but you know there is zero possibility of paying him the wages he would command …

          3. The Osi deal is doable if we can be creative.

Galatasaray paid for him in instalments, just imagine if the €40m used to buy Nkunku was paid as first instalment for Osimhen by now we would have been 50% away from acquiring him completely.

Other clubs go into astute negotiations but I don’t know why we lack such impeccable performances in negotiations, instead we almost always end up overpaying for players.

  2. Give Allegri the Messi and the Ronaldo of this world his pattern of play and selection will kill them. Even if we made it to Champions league what magic will he perform?
The season just only one competition for Milan yet we struggle how much more 3 next season it’s relegation.

    1. You are correct Allegri’s pattern of play will kill top players…other than the Juve team that he won five consecutive Scudettos with and four Coppa Italia’s and one CL final that is.
