Tuttosport: Milan gain useful point in Austria as Pioli, Tonali and Tomori stress key message

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan shared the spoils with Red Bull Salzburg after a 1-1 draw in Austria last night, and a point might not end up being a bad result.

That is according to Tuttosport (via MilanNews), who remark that Milan came up against an intense yet organised Salzburg team who put Stefano Pioli’s men under pressure right from the start, and the Rossoneri in response were very composed mentally but less technically.

The word ‘quality’ is one of the most used by Pioli, and it is an aspect he has always invoked since he arrived on the Milan bench, and after the game he wanted to once again emphasise that the need for quality is evident in the Champions League.

“A good result, but we did not have a high level performance and if you do not raise the quality of plays and dangerous opportunities, you do not create the right chances and risks to suffer for it,” he said after the game.

The result could well end up being favourable given that Chelsea lost against Dinamo Zagreb, but the comments show at Pioli’s hunger when it comes to understanding his mistakes and improving his team.

Pioli’s mentality has now also been inherited by his players, as Sandro Tonali did not stray very far from what his coach said in terms of the levels expected and demanded.

“We wanted to win, the draw shouldn’t be enough. We stayed the whole game on the line without playing our best football, but without playing badly either,” he said.

Fikayo Tomori also echoed that: “We played well, but not at our level.” The Rossoneri know that they can and must do more, but they are young, strong and no doubt absolutely desperate to show their improvements next Wednesday against Dinamo Zagreb.

  1. More Like 2 pts dropped. We are now the Italian Champions..we need to have higher expectations than a draw vs Salzburg who outplayed us most of the game. False positivity will get us nowhere. Pioli needs to Play Adli, Vrancx, Kjaer and Thiaw vs Samp to allow our guys some rest coz that game vs Dinamo Zagreb is a must win now.
Our mentality needs fixing. We don’t GET AT teams, we only wake up after they score. This will hurt us long term

    1. Salzburg has been champions in their league for many years now. And they have more UCL experience than us over the last few years. Alot of our players and coach only had one. A point in a tough group is fine. And the group is a tough group with domestic champions. Don’t be deluded by the Serie A champions tag. We’re not the only one winning a title.

  2. Outplayed in what sense???. Chanses created were almost the same and we dictaded the tempo. Milans problem was in the final third as usual. Lack of creativity and bad decisionmaking. In a match like this Rebic whould have been more useful then Giroud and Origi.

  3. Milan out played them in all aspects what is @AC Milan fan97 saying are you watching back of television? Had giroud pass the first attempt to leao the results will have been different coupled with wrong choices and poor origi performance
