Sportitalia: Sliding doors moment – Milan would have kept Conceicao with cup win

The AC Milan leadership planned to continue with Sergio Conceicao in the event that he had won the Coppa Italia final, it is claimed.

Milan lost the cup final 1-0 in Rome on Wednesday night and with it their best route into European competitions for 2025-26 vanished. As a result, the media headlines have since been dominated by stories of summer revolutions and, naturally, who will replace Conceicao.

After the switch to a three-man defence last month, there had been talk of Conceicao’s chances of staying beyond the end of the season being on the rise. However, this will not be the case, given the lost Coppa Italia final and the various issues that the club did not like during his six months.

As Sportitalia (via MilanPress) reports though, the Portuguese coach was very close to keeping his job. In the event of a victory at the Stadio Olimpico in the cup final, the project would have continued and most likely with the addition of a sporting director.

Instead, the Diavolo are searching for their fourth head coach in 12 months after Stefano Pioli left at the end of last season. Paulo Fonseca took his place and lasted a few months, with the same fate awaiting his compatriot now.

  1. Obviously that’s completely made up and they don’t know that for sure…

…but if that was the case it would be awful decision making and reflect even worse on the board than recent events already do.

Is he the best coach available for the team next season? If yes, he should stay. If no, he shouldn’t.

  2. He made too many enemies all too quickly. Sadly, the club has lost its real identity. Well done to Mr Cardinale. Another American disaster.

  3. If this is true then that was one of the best losses ever. Well worth it.
Just the fact that were considering bringing him back is very troubling. Raises serious concerns about the decision making here or who is even making the decisions.
We’ve looked terrible and fallen behind in almost every single match he has coached. The man has no ideas and no tactics.

  4. Sergio Consasio is best coach for Milan next year Milan could become best team if he stay at Milan .

  5. If (and a big if) this was true then this is just horrendous management. Therefore I wouldn’t put it past them. You can’t let one game decide a coach’s fate like that of you’re a serious club
