MN: Calabria clarified his words to Pioli after Milan’s defeat against PSG

By Isak Möller -

After the defeat against PSG last night, AC Milan captain Davide Calabria was very honest in his interview with the media and said a few words to energise his teammates. Stefano Pioli, however, didn’t appreciate his phrasing.

Calabria discussed the poor performance and what went wrong in the interview, which you can read here, and ended it with: “Anyone who doesn’t believe in it [qualification] can stay at home”. Words that Pioli perhaps didn’t understand completely as he responded: “Davide was wrong, no one works at Milanello with little attention or no commitment”.

As reported by MilanNews, Calabria clarified his words to Pioli after the respective interviews, explaining that he wanted to motivate and energise his teammates to fight until the end. There was no tension between the two, who spoke in a very serene tone.

It seems a majority of the back-and-forth was due to a simple misunderstanding, as Calabria didn’t mean that his teammates have lacked commitment at Milanello. He said exactly the opposite, but also wanted to highlight that maximum effort will be needed in the next three games.

      1. Defend what, we are just playing wide and not creating chances, this coach lacks tactics.. he should just go back to the normal 4231 information or sack poli

  1. Sounds like damage control by the club to me. Sounds like both got a tongue lashing and were told to squash it in the media. Calabria is right for calling out Pioli though. We can’t be playing champions league matches like Serie A matches.

  2. At this point, we peaked with Pioli, it’s clear as day. No one is improving or getting better. When we struggle to beat Genoa 1-0 and continually show zero offensive tactics, there needs to be a serious conversation amongst the higher-ups. We have 0 goals in the past 5 CL games. In our two biggest games in Serie A this year against Inter and Juve we scored 1 garbage goal.

  3. The style and pattern of play is influenced by the coach and pioli seems to have passed his peak but it’s risky changing as it will take time to adapt to their system and we don’t even know if the coach that might replace pioli will actually work out

  4. Off topic, but i thought i saw Pioli took a tumble by the sideline when krunic was getting treatment. Was it just me or anyone else saw it?

Maybe i was just seeing things…

  5. The problem is, Pioli keeps saying everything is fine and doesn’t change anything. He keeps plodding forward with the same plan that isn’t working anymore. Repeated issues from this year and past, resurface again and again.

Like players, coaches (Pioli) needs to continue to adapt and grow as a coach. So far, he hasn’t done that.

When Milan won the scudetto with him, the team was organized, playing defensively as a unit and Pioli was able to figure out a way to get the pbest out of the players. Milan today seems very disjointed and Pioli is not getting the best out of his players.

Round hole, square peg. Pioli has to help resolve some of the underlying problems or he himself becomes the problem.

  6. The truth is that Pioli can’t coach Acmilan he don’t know tactics at all he don’t know how to address issues even the locker room he don’t know how to get the best of players he don’t how to build up team if Pioli knows what is doing after the 5-1 he would have switched to the 4-2-3-1 since Acmilan are really Good in it but the coach is just a fool I’m sorry that Pioli brought us pain and tears in champions league and the coach is not ready to change to get a positive results instead he is causing us more pains and tears I cried yesterday when I saw PSG humiliating us I was pained the coach even uses wrong players don’t even understand players at all using the tired Geroud over Okafor using tomori and thiaw over kalulu and Kjaer infact he supposed to sell Geroud, tomori and thiaw they spoiled our 4-2-3-1 formation against inter Milan now if Pioli is a true coach he would have know that as leao doesn’t score goals his because is not used to 4-3-3 so he need to switch to 4-2-3-1 given Romero and Colombo playing time because there skills can help the team use Okafor instead of tired Geroud used pulisic or musah as attacking midfield now benercer is recovering make benercer king of attacking midfield use pulisic as vice then use rejnder and krunic as double pivot we need to win our remaining 3 matches and if Acmilan don’t qualify from this group because of the 4-3-3 consistency Pioli should be sacked immediately since he don’t want to help the team Acmilan has glorious future we can’t go down because of one man that’s not ready to help out
