Johnny Cardoso has been linked with AC Milan as an alternative to Youssouf Fofana, or a Plan B if you will, in the last few weeks. However, with the window approaching its end, the Rossoneri could change their strategy completely.
Fofana has been the No.1 target for the midfield role since the start of the summer and although the negotiations are tough, Milan haven’t given up yet. That being said, as reported by MilanNews, they could be forced to adopt a new strategy.
According to the report, Fofana is indeed the primary target but the Johnny Cardoso idea is gathering steam. Although he plays for the United States, he has an Italian passport and would thus not need a non-EU spot at Milan (there are none free at the moment).
Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Manu Kone is also one of the alternatives to Fofana but as stated by the report, Cardoso is ahead. Indeed, Milan could decide to sign the 22-year-old Betis midfielder this summer and then secure Fofana on a free transfer next summer.
Fofana has a contract agreement with Milan and while he perhaps wouldn’t like to wait one more year, this hypothesis cannot be excluded. It remains to be seen what will happen in the coming weeks.

I don’t know Cardoso, but his defensive stats are impressive and we need first and foremost a defensive midfield. Of course Fofana has a different curriculum and probably gives way more with the ball.
If we offload Adli and Pobega it may even make sense to get both, althought RLC will play more games as DM this year.

I don’t like judging players from one game, but yesterday Koné was deployed as the lone defensive midfielder and I didn’t like what I saw from him (granted though, most of the french team weren’t terrific either).
There is also Florentino from Benfica who appears to have decent defensive stats.

The difference between them and Fofana is that their main duty is the defensive one. Fofana is the ball carrier in Monaco, he was paired with Tchouaméni and now with Camara, you know why ? Because he needs a more defensive player than himself in order to perform well. We don’t have that, we need a defensive profile, not another ball carrier.
Physically strong ? RLC is strong as an ox and Musah is a superhuman, yet none of them can do shit defensively. This is not a strongman competition.

As for Fofana – he will not wait for a year to join us next summer on a free. To think otherwise is incredibly naive. Yoro was supposedly going to wait for Real Madrid until he decided not to.
I’m more concerned with the general lack effectiveness in the transfer market rather than the money spent. We seem to be talking about a few players for months now and nothing is finalized. Also the pre-season is at an end and our first game is in a week. That’s not enough time to bring a bunch of new players and allow them to settle in. The fact is that the beginning of the season will not be easy.
Fofana want a much higher salary next year plus higher commission for his agent. So forget about it. Agree 100%.
