MN: Emerson Royal done, now the midfielder – Milan want to accelerate for Fofana

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have closed negotiations with Tottenham for full-back Emerson Royal and he will be the third signing of the summer, but it is unlikely that he will be the last.

According to MilanNews, contact between the clubs have effectively sealed the definitive agreement between Milan and Tottenham over Emerson Royal, who will arrive for €15m plus bonuses and will sign a five-year contract.

One of the things that played in the Rossoneri’s favour was how much the Brazilian wanted the move, so much so that terms were agreed many weeks ago. After Alvaro Morata and Strahinja Pavlovic, therefore, the former Betis and Barcelona player will be Milan’s third signing of the mercato.

After having sorted out the attack and defense, Milan now want to accelerate for a central midfielder. In this sense, there is still hope of getting Youssouf Fofana, a 25-year-old midfielder at Monaco who the management have been pursuing for a while now.

Despite the high demands of the Monegasque club, Geoffrey Moncada and co. are banking a lot on the player’s desire to move to the Rossoneri and next week could be decisive, because positive signs must come otherwise alternatives may be pursued.

  1. Let’s goo get Fofana and we end this drama , we spent 48M€ for these 3 players , we should have the resources after selling CDK and second position

    1. I don’t think it’s just a matter of remaining resources, if Milan does not spend much this summer it would boost the financial stability of the team in the long run which would allow for bigger spending potential in the future.

      1. I agree with the logic, but we are in serious need for a physical midfielder, it’s not about long term spending but a serious issue we have today , the US tour just confirmed how our midfield is easily overplayed especially against Barca …

        1. The midfield was not outplayed by Barca’s kids because of the lack of a DM. Milan was not overrun as so many claimed. Milan couldn’t keep the ball, something that a DM would be no help with, would probably make matters worse in fact. If they had players with the skill to dribble and pass their way out of Barca’s press it would not have been an issue. Tell me how a DM would have helped that. Losing the ball, which they did repeatedly, and winning it back are two separate things. What ball-winning at all cost DM was Barca playing with? It’s not about having one player who has an assignment of being the defensive midfielder, it’s about having a system in place and ALL the players buying into it where the other side has no time and space to play the ball.
Face it Gattusu is long retired and Milan isn’t signing Rodri, so why all the cry for a DM at all cost? How about just signing good players who will put in effort the length of the pitch. Very few top teams actually play with a true ball-winner, because they are few and far between and you need to make up for the fact that they aren’t going to be much help going forward.

          1. I never said we need a DM, I said we need a physical midfielder, and physical also means powerhouse profile who runs and cover more ground, making it more difficul for the oppenent to make passes, and also a stronger press, and Fofana not only has that but he has also good passings and drilling skills, so yeah, I think he can definitely help.

          2. So I mean if you’re going to think about DM in the Football Manager sense of the word (as though your football knowledge is 20 years out of date) I agree with you.

We do need someone though, who will protect the defence when overloaded by a high press (something teams are fully aware we cant cope with), and has the strength and composure to sit in and hold the ball after a turnover while we reshape. Gattuso would have been terrible at that, by the way.

          3. A proper DM would have helepd on the second goal if u want to check it again. Tomori had to step up because the space between the midfield and defence is too far. If a DM was there there’s no need to move into that space (typically occupied by said DM) and he’d be with his CB partner and helping out on late or far side runs

      2. I think the right DM is the difference between having a good shot at the league title, or top 4 being at risk (given Juve, Napoli and Roma have all got their house in order). So I understand your logic but sometimes one can be too risk averse.

        1. Do Juve Roma and Napoli have their houses together but ours is a mess? Hahaha stop with the weird negative nonsense. All thoose team were and are inferior to our squad.

          1. Where do I say we’re a mess? I actually say if we invest in the right DM we can win the league.

Stop being so binary. I’m one of the biggest defenders of the board on here – it doesn’t mean I can’t point out our issues.

        2. What the f are you talking, Osimhen and Karba want to leave, Todibo looks like he’ll fall though for Juve, and Roma always look good this time of year… on paper 😂

          1. Oh no a lol face, I feel so affirmatively put in my place!

Napoli have fixed their defence, Kvara isn’t going nowhere, and if Osimhen does leave, they’ll have a healthy purse to replace him with.

Juve look vastly better than last season.

Roma is probably a stretch but they have signed well and have a full season ahead under an effective coach.

It’s basic law of diminishing returns. Our improvements have been marginal and the only place we have room for massive improvement is the only place we haven’t addressed.

Something I said triggered you and it obviously blinded you to the fact I actually said we can win the league if we address this one thing.

Here’s some lol faces for you for the sake of it 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

        3. Napoli and Roma finished behind us despite us basically losing for an entire month last year. Juve got thumped by FC Nürnberg in preseason, so I haven’t seen any positive signs from them so far.

        4. You’re right. Our midfield is what will make or break this season. Especially the DM we bring and whether or not they can play the pivot.

Our attack keeps us in Top4 this season but to make a push and breathe down Inter’s neck we’ll need to have the mid sorted out.

True, others have strengthened but there are plenty of questions to be asked of other teams as well.

          For example:
Inter – I question their defense. Acerbi isn’t getting younger and was dropping in form as was DeVrij. Bissek? Still has to prove himself. Their mid and frontline are stacked.

Juve – has a lot of holes to plug and a new manager to make it all work. They will be a slow starter but if all goes well might start catching up towards second half of season.

Napoli – on paper look great but it depends on if Conte gets his way or not. Conte/ADL mix is a lot match at a fireworks factory. Napoli should easily be Top4.

Roma – improved but DDR is still developing, Soule hasn’t really played at a big club and not sure can cope with the pressure and Dybala starting. Dovbyk will need to settle. Roma as a club are still not there quite yet. They will battle Atalanta for 5-6th.

Like I said, if we address our midfield we can mount a better challenge. A lot will depend on whether Fonseca can stabilize our defense.

  2. Interesting choice by management seeing as his performances have tanked the last couple of years, but let’s hope he can be reborn like other prem “rejects” RLC and Pulisic. He has the right attitude and desire to play for Milan which counts for something. Now let’s go grab Fofana or Cardoso.

  3. If I don’t mistake Thiaw has played as DM before why the coach don’t give him a chance to play DM and see how that works?

    1. This is actually true. Thiaw has played DM irrc and people also don’t look at games in other leagues or other clubs in this forum enough to be able to for or make these statements. Good on u bro!

  4. Thiaw lack of awareness doesn’t make him a good fit to even be tried as a DM. Yes, his physicality can be a useful but It requires more than that. A lot of movement and awareness, and good ball control because you’re shielding the defense.

  5. Thiaw as DM? Lol no. What are people thinking?

Anyways, I’m fine with Emerson coming and will back him fully. Welcome to Milan!

  6. If we’re talking about a Kessie replica, that’s someone who can defend, and also settle the team and reclaim the tempo of the game.
