MN: From Lazio to Lazio – Milan hoping to summon last year’s spirit and win at the Olimpico again

By Oliver Fisher -

There is an interesting sub-plot to Milan’s game against Lazio regarding the scorers during the same fixture last season.

As MilanNews writes, Hakan Calhanoglu, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ante Rebic represent (together with Kessie, Hauge and Brahim Diaz) the most recent goal scorers for the Rossoneri. Between Covid and various injuries their contribution in recent months has been lacking, and since the derby on 21 February only on one occasion (against Parma) have they all played together from the first minute.

The last and only time in which they scored in the same match dates back to last July 4, when Milan beat Lazio 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico and the Diavolo’s post-lockdown surge truly begun. Such a big win against a top team fighting for the Scudetto gave Milan the right push, and they then beat Juventus 4-2 at home as well.

Before the game tonight, Pioli said: “These 32 matches have told us that we have been stronger than everyone except Inter. We were the only ones to keep up with the Nerazzurri. We can play the last few days with our ambitions and our goal still there to be achieved. We are here not for luck but because we deserved it.”

The Rossoneri fans are hoping for an outcome similar to that of last summer, which would give a considerable emotional impetus to the race towards the Champions League, and though Ibrahimovic will not be there Rebic and Calhanoglu will.
