MN: Kjaer and Thiaw to start together for the third time – the precedents

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s starting line-up for the derby against Inter will be almost identical to the side that took to the field in the first three games of the season, but only almost.

As MilanNews writes, Stefano Pioli will have to do without both Fikayo Tomori, who is suspended for one match after the red card against Roma, and Pierre Kalulu, who got injured over the break in training at Milanello.

Who will be there alongside Malick Thiaw? The answer is clear and the German’s comments last night seemed to confirm it: “The coach decides who plays with whom. Kjaer? I think he is a very experienced player, very good, who talks a lot and I feel very comfortable playing with him. I hope he feels comfortable playing with me too.”

The Danish defender will have to feel at ease with Thiaw because the two have only ever started together twice: against Cremonese in November 2022 (0-0 draw) and against Tottenham at San Siro in February (1-0 win).

The precedent is good therefore, with zero goals conceded on both occasions, but that was with them in a three-man defence and not as a pairing, while in Saturday’s derby it will be a 4-3-3 system.

It will be an unprecedented pairing in that sense. Kjaer’s experience could be fundamental, even if he will have to contend with the speed of the Nerazzurri attackers, with which Thiaw’s match rhythm will help.

  1. I feel bad for Kalulu not making this match. I’m also worried how Kjaer will be able to compete with Inter’s forward speed.

Pioli needs to work on how to neutralise Chalanoglu because he will be the one to dictate the play from deep with his long balls to the pacy forwards.

  2. I honestly don’t feel super relaxed about any of our backline (including Tomori) apart from Thiaw and Theo. Let’s stick the Dane in, I guess, and hope we can score more than Inter down the other end.

  3. Kjaer’s long passes are a joy to watch. Also think he is more of an aerial threat than the other two sidelined center backs. Hopefully he puts these two assets to good use in the offensive phase.

Inter has a really good defense despite the actual names and talent being not that great. Hopefully we can do the same.

  4. Lautaro made a joke out of Kjaer last time. I respect the guy a lot but I doubt he can play against Inter. Let me repeat again — Simic!

    1. if you seriously deem simic who has never played a senior match as a better player or choice than kjæer for the the dellla madoninna then sorry i can kinds hear the the international clown tune run in the background to what you are saying because its beyond a ridiculous suggestion.

  5. Kjaer brings experience, calmness and long passing… but he is SO slow at this point and no lateral quickness. Lautaro and Thuram can move, I don’t think this is a good game for him, hope I’m wrong.

  6. I personally sooo much want this derby will be ours victory.

But, this new Milan are still young, and Inter from Conte’s era until now, still stronger than us.

Even though, I believe this season, we can overcome Inter, and dominate again in Champions League.

  7. It is Predictable ig Kjear and Krunic are both lined up togather we are at High Risk of loosibg thr game because the arr lazy ones and have quality of Strenght whlie Inter Lines up Three Fast Playmakers togather.
Musah and Pelligerino are the better Options to line up.

  8. The derby is the litmus test 1for the shopping spree that Moncada went for. Will it prove a point? Will it fail the test?

Let’s wait and see. 6 more matches to get a firm idea of how effective ACM summer changes and transfers really are.

    Godspeed ACM! Forza

  9. The problem is pioli, I’d rather prefer 4-2-3-1,musah and RLC on the pivot, Pellegrino/simic instead of kjear.then leao, pulisic, okafor and Giroud upfront. Fulltime: inter 0- 4 Milan.

  10. I hope Kjaer can replicate and grow into the role Billy Costacurta had during his last playing years at Milan.

He didn’t play too often, he was far from being fast… but boy what kind of confidence he transmitted to the whole defence. Always in right position and always seemed to have all the time in the world. In games when Milan had to defend a lead, it was a relief everytime Billy started to warm up.

  11. I don’t see inter as a threat cos they have only 3 players as a threat to Milan, milas have more dangerous player than inter our only problem is our coach, it was only in his coaching period that Milan have lost so many times against inter, pioli is always afraid of trying new things generally, always sticking to what he knows and believes even though he’s wrong I don’t like his style of coaching, he hasn’t found out why he always lose woefully against inter as a coach, he could have prevented d tomori red card even tho tomori is a rough defender who called for card, right now we are more threat to d the whole Serie A club than inter inter only have strong midfielders and defenders who are prone to cause more free kicks and penalties against Milan, that can happen if pioli knows d right thing to do. Give conte this kind of squard believe me they will play unbeaten for more than 20 matches.

    1. milan didnt lose a serie a match for nearly 8 months or something in recent years and with a lesser squad and i doubt conte would have been able to do that with such a squad, in fact conte most likely would have been sacked in between for complaining about the state of the team.
