MN: Big-game goals and MOTM awards – Leao still Milan’s leading man

By Oliver Fisher -

Rafael Leao has been heavily scrutinised and criticised so far this season for his often inconsistent performances and the goal drought he ensured, yet he remains the man for the biggest occasions.

MilanNews relay some interesting stats regarding Leao, who was named Man of the Match by UEFA for his performance against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday night, a game in which he scored his first goal for over a month.

Despite not scoring in Serie A since September, the Portuguese winger has always had an impact in big matches, or at least that’s what the record says for the current season so far.

Against Roma he scored with an overhead kick that ended up being the winner, while in the defeat against Inter he was the Rossoneri’s only scorer in the second half. He didn’t play well against Juventus, perhaps struggling against a deep defence and the fact Malick Thiaw was sent off in the first half.

In the Champions League, however, he was named UEFA’s Man of the Match three times: against Newcastle United (despite his failed backheel), away against Borussia Dortmund and then in the most recent game against PSG, also scoring with an overhead kick in that one.

  1. But how? You wrote he was bad against some of those. If I remember correctly he got 4.5 for the game against Dortmund here…it is disgraceful you did that…

    1. Not really. They gave him 7.5 against Dortmund and 5.5 against Newcastle, from what I can recall. The rating were harsh, but when you take his performance into consideration, you also have to add all those sitters he missed. Remember the back heel, that header. I think 5.5 is still low considering how many good chances he created fir Chukwueze and Giroud.

    2. “it is disgraceful you did that…”

LOL. Pretty much the only “disgraceful” on this page is your attack on the writer. Just let it be, FFS. Always picking a fight. Always so negative.

      1. He pretty much does this on every match rating post. I think Isak is the one who does the ratings, and he does a pretty good job in my opinion. The content on this website is mostly top-notch (especially the match previews and devil’s advocate), I don’t think this baseless hatred is necessary, but this is Giancarlo who we are dealing with.
