MN: Maignan forced to miss Juventus game due to adductor strain

By Oliver Fisher -

Stefano Pioli was forced to make a late change to AC Milan’s starting line-up for the game against Juventus as Mike Maignan suffered an injury during the warm-ups.

Just moments before the teams were due in the tunnel, news emerged that Maignan would not be starting between the posts and that it would instead be the veteran back-up Marco Sportiello.

According to what is being reported by MilanNews, the French goalkeeper has suffered an adductor strain in the warm-ups and thus the decision was made to remove him from the team, with Sportiello getting the nod instead.

Further information on the severity of the issue that Maignan has will emerge in the hours and days after the game, but it is certainly another frustrating blow for the former Lille man who has had several muscle problems since being at Milan.

Added to that is the fact that there is a defensive crisis for Pioli to battle. Simon Kjaer and Pierre Kalulu are both injured, while Fikayo Tomori picked up his fifth yellow card in the Inter game and thus a one-match ban.

Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria got straight red cards in Monday’s defeat, which means they are watching from the sidelines too.

  1. This is really incredible, it baffles me to the point of sheer incredulity. Goddamnit, Maignan is a great keeper, but the frailty of his physical condition, or his bad luck, I don’t know, is something fvckin absurd. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a goalkeeper get so damn injured. If the board decides to sell one of the stars of the team, I really hope it will be him, contractual issues aside!

  2. Wow. That’s it. Must be the most injury prone starting keeper in the world. It’s not even in the match, it’s only warm up ffs.

If any big clubs offer more than 50m for him, id suggest just accept it (or haggle for something between 60-70m)

Top keeper when fit and playing regularly, but those games comes too scarce nowadays.

If any important offer come, just sell him and find another No.1… With 30m we surely can find someone, maybe a bit less quality but more fit and not injury prone. Someone like Di Gregorio (if he isn’t go to Juve), Carnesecchi, Kelleher, Bento, or even Kepa (he is decent at Real Madrid).

  3. As far as I remember, and I’ve been following Serie A for decades, he is indeed by far the most injure prone keeper I’ve ever seen in the tournament, seriously. Its getting ridiculous.

  4. Didn’t follow him before he joined us, so could anyone shed a light whether he was always injury prone, or it’s only after he joined us?

    1. According to transfermarkt this is his injury history exlduing the one he just got. The bottom stat is the only one while not playing for ac milan.

      1. does seem like its a bit inaqcurate as i remember him being out for longer than 10 days this season but my memory might be wrong.

  5. He’s either very injury prone or he has no desire to play for Pioli/miss-firing side. Hopefully, the euros will push his price tag up then part ways with him.

  6. Cheers mate.

So basically, according to the stats, he’s suddenly made of glass once he played for us, what gives.. I meant, even that 2015 shoulder injury is a *reasonable* injury for a goalkeeper. Maignan’s injury with us is just baffling as mostly are legs injuries.

Does he train with stiletto at Milanello?

      1. Got it, no worries. At least it seems like he has become more prone to injuries while getting older. The only thing i know about his training is that he also trains kick boxing maybe thats part of the equation.

  7. Considering his injury, his tendencies to get injured and this game by Sportiello, is it a good opportunity to discuss his renewal with our terms ?

  8. ACM lucky signing sportielo , if still tatarusanu then ACM will lose vs juve . Sportielo make great save vs juve. Mike are good GK but i dont think management will give him 8m euro nett ( he is asking that amount) . Swap him with JZ it is a nice idea too ( cooperate with bayern muenchen that have buy back option 40m euro )
