MN: Maldini’s hope regarding Calhanoglu’s renewal outlined – the stance of the two parties

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have not completely given up hope on reaching an agreement over a renewal with Hakan Calhanoglu, according to a report.

MilanNews are reporting that Dominik Szoboszlai could leave Salzburg in January or June, and Milan have returned to put the Hungary international ‘at the top of their list of possible signings’.

The same outlet are reporting though that it all depends on the resolution of the Calhanoglu issue, because from a numerical point of view the squad would be complete if he were to renew.

It will not be straightforward, however, as Calhanoglu’s economic demands are very high: he would like more than double the €2.5m net per year he currently earns, while Milan have gone up to €3.5m and will not go further.

Technical director Paolo Maldini’s hope is that Calhanoglu will be able to convince himself to stay on a lower salary, especially given the moment of crisis that the world of football is experiencing due to the Coronavirus.

If Calhanoglu were to extend it will be at the amount that the club dictates, otherwise he could leave on a free transfer at the end of the season and in that case Milan would push for Szoboszlai, the report concludes.
