MN: Messias tried in midfield three by Pioli in training ahead of Inter game

Junior Messias was tried in an unprecedented role in training today as Stefano Pioli continues preparations for the derby, a report claims.

The build up to the game so far has been dominated by the news of a potential formation change by Pioli to try and make his side more compact and also give the defensive line more protection after conceding 18 goals in the last seven games.

According to what is being reported by MilanNews, Pioli carried out various tests in training in view of Sunday evening’s derby against Inter, which has an added importance given the dreadful start to 2023.

In particular the article mentions that the Milan boss tried Junior Messias as a mezzala in the 4-3-3, with Sandro Tonali and Rade Krunic joining him in the midfield three and Alexis Saelemaekers on the right side of the attack.

It would be a position that Messias has played before during his time at Crotone but rarely, and he has never performed that role for Milan before.
