MN: Milan abandon Popovic pursuit despite arrival in Italy – the reasons

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan have more or less abandoned their pursuit of the Serbian starlet Matija Popovic, report claims. The attacking midfielder arrived in the city yesterday and paradoxically, this is one of the reasons why the Rossoneri have backed out.

Popovic has been linked with a move to Milan for quite some time now, having not played for Partizan’s U19 side since the end of last season due to contract disagreements. The latter deal expired at the start of this month, and he looked set to join the Rossoneri on a free transfer.

Yesterday, in fact, Popovic arrived in Milano and it seemed the deal was more or less done. However, as reported by both Antonio Vitiello and Pietro Mazzara, Milan have more or less abandoned their pursuit of the 18-year-old.

The commissions demanded by Popovic’s entourage have been deemed too high and a middle ground has not been found in the negotiations. Furthermore, the player and his entourage organised the trip to Milano before Milan gave their go-ahead, which is an attitude that the management didn’t appreciate.

Juventus have now joined the race for the youngster and it seems he will not end up at Milan this month. This could prompt the Rossoneri to go out and sign another non-EU player, which you can read more about in our non-EU rules breakdown.
