MN: Milan could look to fix back-up goalkeeper issue as early as January

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are planning on making some changes to their goalkeeping department in the coming months and Ciprian Tatarusanu’s future is uncertain, a report claims.

MilanNews writes that the absence of Mike Maignan in goal due to injury has no doubt hurt Milan because the Frenchman’s contribution is certainly greater than any other goalkeeper in the squad can guarantee, not only on a technical level but above all on a charismatic level with his leadership.

Nonetheless, Milan have got through to the knockout round of the Champions League and are second in the table, so while Tatarusanu is not free from faults he has also not done a terrible job as Maignan’s replacement.

The 37-year-old Tatarusanu does not offer what the 27-year-old Maignan does, and the gap is actually quite large, something the management are aware of with the transfer market opening again in January thus allowing for tweaks to the squad.

After starting the first seven games of this season, Maignan has been on the sidelines for over a month after tearing the medial twin muscle of his left calf and then suffering another calf issue which means he will also miss the World Cup.

Now the countdown has started for his return to the field which, barring complications, should be against Salernitana in the first game of the second half of the season. In the meantime, Tatarusanu’s deal expires next June and he may have played his last game in his bid to convince the management he deserves a renewal.
