MN: Milan made last-minute attempt to sign key Fiorentina player – the background

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan made a deadline day attempt to sign Fiorentina centre-back German Pezzella without success, according to a report.

So many targets were linked during the window, including the likes of Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer, Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic and Saint-Etienne’s Wesley Fofana.

Then even on deadline day there were three irons in the fire: Schalke’s Ozan Kabak, Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger and Strasbourg’s Mohamed Simakan.

Ultimately, not a single one of the over 10 centre-backs linked with Milan ended up arriving, and it has left many fans feeling understandably underwhelmed.

According to MilanNews, Milan tried until the last minute to give Stefano Pioli a new defender. The Rossoneri attempted to sign different profiles including Kabak and Simakan, but the report adds that Maldini and Massara tried to get German Pezzella on loan from Fiorentina.

However, La Viola rejected Milan’s bid out of hand, and it is not particularly surprising given he is a key piece for them.
