MN: Milan without a goal against Inter for 375 days – the dry spell must end

The last four derbies have not been kind to AC Milan as they not only lost each of the games against Inter across all competitions, but they failed to score too.

MilanNews throws things back to September 2022. A throw-in by Theo Hernandez, a back heel by Olivier Giroud, a quick acceleration from Rafael Leao disorientates Alessandro Bastoni and Stefano De Vrij before the Portuguese winger slots it past Samir Handanovic.

It was a goal as beautiful as it was significant, not only because it was the third goal against the Nerazzurri but also because of the three points it more or less guaranteed the Rossoneri in a big early-season indicator.

Milan had just won the Scudetto and they dominated that match at the beginning of September 2022 against Inter and won it 3-2 in the end. Since the, the blue half of the city have celebrated four wins out of four with seven goals conceded by Milan and zero scored.

Perhaps this is precisely the aspect that made Stefano Pioli and his staff reflect the most during the summer, as well as the fact that in each of the last 10 matches across Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League, the Nerazzurri have scored first every time.

Milan need quality and creativity to finally break Inter down and put one (hopefully multiple) past Yann Sommer. Christian Pulisic – together with his former Chelsea team-mate Giroud and his new accomplice on the opposite flank Rafa Leao – has already shown very good things with goals, assists and dangerous plays.

Inter are yet to concede this season after three games, and they are a wall that the Diavolo have not been been able to break down for four games.

A greater balance in midfield and high quality on both wings – and not just on the left – could be the keys to making life more difficult for Simone Inzaghi’s men compared to the most recent matches.

Milan’s attack goes into the match with eight goals on the scoresheet and seven of these goals were scored by Giroud (4), Pulsic (2) and Leao (1). With a renewed attack, Milan will also try to buck the recent trend.
