MN: Milan’s most used starting XI this season – Tonali and Castillejo present

By Isak Möller -

Due to many injuries as well as COVID cases, there are some surprises in Milan’s most used starting XI this season. There are no doubts that Stefano Pioli has been put in a difficult situation many times due to the absences.

In the defensive department, as compiled by MilanNews, it’s what you would expect with the usual back four and Gigio Donnarumma in goal. All five of them, with the goalkeeper at the top, have played a lot this season.

Due to his injury struggles, Ismael Bennacer isn’t present in the XI and has paved the way for Sandro Tonali. This was meant to be a season of acclimatisation for the youngster, instead he has been thrown into the action straight away.

In the attacking trio, Samu Castillejo and Alexis Saelemaekers are both included as Ante Rebic has struggled with injuries, while Jens Petter Hauge has had few chances. That leaves Rafael Leao up front, mainly due to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s injuries.

Most used Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Donnarumma G (3000 minutes); Calabria (2556), Kjaer (2205), Romagnoli (2440), Theo Hernandez (2890); Kessie (2844), Tonali (1742); Castillejo (1679), Calhanoglu (2265), Saelemaekers (1621); Leao (1839).
