MN: Pioli welcomes two key defenders back into squad for Atalanta clash

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have named their squad list for the game against Atalanta at San Siro tonight and there is good news regarding two defenders.

As MilanNews reports, the team are currently at a hotel in the centre of the city ahead of this evening’s match against Atalanta at San Siro, and the squad has been named.

The good news for Stefano Pioli is that Davide Calabria returns, as well as central defender Pierre Kalulu. The former was injured two weeks ago against Napoli, but the problem was not a serious one.

Meanwhile the French defender – who underwent surgery at the beginning of November after suffering a lesion to the left rectus femoris tendon – returns available after 119 days out.

Also present in the squad list is the young Primavera goalkeeper Noah Raveyre. Still absent, however, is Fikayo Tomori who has returned to training regularly with the group and should return to the squad for Friday’s away match at Lazio.

Besides him, the injured Tommaso Pobega and the suspended Luka Jovic are also not available for the match tonight, which has a bit of added meaning given that La Dea are in great form and are hoping to further close the gap to the Rossoneri.

  1. If Gabbia gets dropped then it proves that youth players are discriminated in favour of players bought or loaned in.

Which is bonkers given youth players are free and should have a closer relationship with the club.

Does anyone actually see Gabbia being our starting CB this time next year?

He might have earned himself a reprieve but I reckon after we sign 3-4 CBs this morning (with the money we’ve made from flippin’ Tomori or Thiaw) he’ll be finished at Milan.

He needs to produce twice the performances of signed players to stand a chance.

    1. That’s a weird take.

Gabbia is good for mid table sides and getting thru smaller teams in Europa league. Any reason he’d get dropped is because THERE ARE better CBs in this current roster for the job. Kalulu and Thiaw previously has shown a higher ceiling and ability.

Gabbia has been good for the time being. But he’s not a long term solution and a depth player moving forward. There’s no bias. That’s just reality.

      1. Are there ‘better’?

        What’s ‘better’?

Do you have some ratings from FIFA?

In real life it’s not about ‘better’ but stability, identity, cohesion, TEAM.

That was the key to the BBC Juve defence and most solid defences through the decades.

But sure let’s keep spinning the wheel on the transfer market. That’s worked so well for 15 years.

  2. Exactly gabbia and kjaer have been there for the time being during the injury crisis. Both have had some good spells but aren’t as good as a healthy tomori or kalulu. Kalulu has been unlucky with injuries. I think he’ll be sold. Gabbia they’ll want to keep but I think he’ll want to be a first choice for some other team next year. He’ll get that moving to Atalanta, sassuolo, Roma, fiorentina or someone like that. After having the worst defence for a long time milan will focus on getting two new starters next season for CB and a new lb and RB. Shame we didn’t buy doig. Calafiori looks great for bologna. I like florenzi but he’s getting on a bit. I looked at the maignan situation with his form. It’s hard not have a solid four Infront of him but it’s interesting that dida left the coaching team back in 2022 I think… I reckon that could be a bit of a factor…

  3. Gabbia has been solid but we are conceding too many goals (not Gabbia fault but the whole team). I believe the future of our defense is Thiaw, Kalulu, Simic and Jimenez (we need to buy that guy)

    1. Simic doesn’t stand a chance because he’s a youth player.

For Jimenez to stand a chance he needs to remain with Real so that Milan can develop him for them.

Thiaw, if he stops getting red cards and giving away penalties, will be flipped eventually so we can sign another 3-4 CBs.

And they’ll probably squeeze out Kalulu.

And none of those players will be at the club in 2 years time.

And we’ll be discussing entirely different players and all their potential and stuff.

I have been doing this for 15 years. You’ll get used to it.

    2. Defensive woes are a system issue Pioli deploys and mismatched personnel for that system. If anything, Gabbia masks a lot of flaws in it with the great form he is in.

  4. Imagine if we had a good right back in our squad… oh wait we do have one called Kalulu who is a RB.

But he is better as a makeshift CB, and it is way smarter to buy a RB on the market instead of investing in a proper CB… or even develop Simic who is starting to get national team calls…

But naaah, we move kalulu to CB and buy a new RB instead. Much wiser.

  5. Kalulu has been so inconsistent even before his injury… not sure which player makes the comeback. The Scudetto form Kalulu or an “impasta”.

    1. Probably an imposter, dont think we will see any of our CB in form until the last games of the season due to the lengthy injuries they had.
