MN: Pioli without Ibrahimovic and Calhanoglu for only the third time – the precedent

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan were only without both Hakan Calhanoglu and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in their starting line-up on two occasions in 2020, but they will have to do without both tomorrow.

Ibrahimovic has been out since November when he sustained a thigh problem during the 3-1 win over Napoli and then a calf problem not long before he was due to return against Sassuolo, while Calhanoglu sustained a swollen ankle in Wednesday’s defeat to Juventus, meaning both are likely to sit out the game against Torino.

As MilanNews reports, Stefano Pioli was without both for the 1-0 win against Sparta Praha in the final group stage game in the Europa League, but the only other occasion that happened was back on January 15 – almost a year ago – in the 3-0 win over SPAL in the Coppa Italia.

In that game Krzysztof Piatek started with Ante Rebic up front, but the opponent, in addition to being weaker than this Torino, did not arrive at San Siro with particular hopes of making it through the round.

The Turk’s injury is not worrying and he should be back after tomorrow’s game, but in attack the choices will be forced with Brahim Diaz and Jens Petter Hauge set to play and with only Daniel Maldini and Lorenzo Colombo on the bench.

Should AC Milan win, they would complete another feat of this fantastic season.
