MN: ‘Stuck in their positions’ – the Calabria renewal stalemate explained

AC Milan and Davide Calabria have reached a stalemate when it comes to the captain’s contract extension and something will have to budge.

As reported by Milan News, the Italian right-back finds himself in a tricky position at Milan now that he is in his final year of the contract, is playing poorly, and has more competition for his spot with Emerson Royal arriving.

Calabria has been a pillar of the Milan setup for many years now and was a worthy choice as captain, but he underperformed last season and has also not started the current campaign well.

His contract is up on June 30, 2025, meaning this could prove to be his final season with Milan. Calabria has not made any direct requests of Milan and is waiting for the contract talks to officially open.

As for Milan, they are keeping their cards close to their chest and have neither opened talks nor shut down the potential for talks.

Ultimately, there is a stalemate between the two parties. In all likeliness, the club is waiting to see if Calabria’s form improves with Emerson putting more pressure on him, whilst also waiting to see how well Emerson settles into his new surroundings.

  1. Let’s see…
    – Calabria not doing well and is under contract negotiations.
    – Theo not doing well and is under contract negotiations.
    – MM16 is under contract negotiations but I guess is doing OK.

Coincidence? Get the deals done and let them focus on playing.

    1. Interesting how Hakan, Kessie, Donnarumma, even Romagnoli were under contract negotiations with the club in their last seasons and were doing well.
Coincidence or maybe they were true professionals and a real men. Those contract negotiations didn’t stop them to give a 100 % and behave professionally until the last game of their contracts.

      1. Yes. They were true professionals till the very end. Although for Gigio & Hakan they probably thought they’d get eventually what they asked for. But still…

        1. Even with that taken into account, the current management doesn’t have an excuse to get the deals done quickly, especially after saying in the summer that no big star is leaving and that the players (Theo, Leao and Maignan) are happy within the club.

  2. For Theo and MM16 there’s plenty of time as their contracts don’t expire till ’26. As for Davide, he is actively being pushed out and I am OK with that.

I’m not sure how he “was a worthy choice as captain” all this time but Milan are actively trying to move on from him. My guess is, they bring in another RB to compete with Royal next summer.
